Asking me which pontoon is my favourite is like asking mefor the best vacation destination—it depends what you want to do, what you need to do and how much you want to spend. It’s not the same answer for everyone and that’s why there is such a myriad of pontoon options out there.
Starcraft isn’t entirely re-inventing the wheel with the MX 25 R. Sure, it may look similar to other pontoons at first glance, but from the side you can see the rails arc in sweeping lines, highlighted with colour. As tested, the blue colour-matched flame graphics are just understated enough to stand out without being obnoxious.
The bow has twin bench seats—theport side is slightly shorter to make room for mid-ship gate. It closes in front of the high-back passenger bucket seat that matches the captain’s chair on the raised helm.
The stern has the tried-and-tested dual bench layout, with roomy storage and easy battery access underneath. The swim platform is spacious even with the removable tow pole in place.
The wake tower is optional and awesome. Not only does the aggressive forward sweep look great with the bimini, so do the transparent panels with the Starcraft logo near the base of each side—a classy touch.
Underway, the comfortable cruise was 32 miles per hour at 4,200 rpm. Without trying, each time we were getting running shots for the test video (view online at BoatTest.ca/USBoatTest.com) I always ended up here. It’s smooth but peppy.
With the HMX performance strakes—full-length lifting strakes on both sides of the centre tube and the insides of the exterior tubes—thishas some good banking in the turns giving it a “traditional boat” feel on a pontoon. It also ups the lift giving a smooth run across the water and through the waves.
Best of all, you get quality construction and the Starcraftwarranty, plus great performance with a very affordable price point.
