Choosing fabrics that withstand the rigors of the marine environment is key to a boat's longevity. Each material is suited to meet the specific needs and uses of different boat owners.
Fabric Choices
With over 5,000,000* hours in the field we are so confident in the quality and construction of our boats that we back them with a five or ten year warranty.
PVC: A heavy-duty, long-life fabric which provides excellent resistance to cuts, abrasion and normal wear. Mercury adds extra UV protectant into the fabric, providing greater protection from ultraviolet rays--a major cause of material breakdown. In addition, all of Mercury PVC seams are welded and not glued--making the seams much stronger.
Performance: Weight - Power - Top Speed Comparisons
With half the weight of a conventional boat, a higher top speed can be achieved with 40% less horsepower...even when loaded with people and gear. Mercury inflatable boats really move!
Stability...by Lowering the Center of Gravity
By lowering the center of gravity, stability is increased while leaning when cornering; and rocking when still is decreased.
Thermowelding
Compared to conventional hand gluing, the advantages of Thermowelding are:
* Stronger adhesion of fabric
* Clear appearance of boat
* Minimized wicking through the fabric yarn
Multiple layers of PVC fabric are bonded by hot air at a specific melting point. Both edges of tube fabric are fed into the roller. Finishing tape is introduced over the seam in preparation for welding. Closing the tube seam is done by welding the seam tape over the center of both sides of the fabric. The seam is stronger than the fabric itself.
Vitech
The lamination process known as Vacuum Injection Technology® combines both the techniques of robotic production and skilled labor, in conjunction with high quality raw materials, achieves an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.
One of the determining factors in the manufacture of a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) is the lamination of its deck. Mercury VITECH RIBs are extremely well reinforced, employing a system of sandwich lamination.
Between layers, additional structure support rods are inserted for added strength.
