2002 Carver 346 Aft Cabin Description
In the past, generally, if you wanted style and performance you probably leaned towards express cruisers. If you wanted comfort and livability you probably preferred an aft cabin. With the introduction of Carver’s new 346 Aft Cabin Motor Yacht you now can have style, performance, and livability all in one boat.
With the overwhelming success of Carver’s 396, 466 and 506 motor yachts, Carver’s contemporary motor yacht design was a logical choice for the 346.
Like these other Carver aft cabins, the 346 uses the raised “sidewalk” design with frameless windows both above and below the deck line, most notably Carver’s signature elliptical window that allows a good view out of the salon area. As well, like its bigger brothers, the aft deck on the 346 is protected with fibreglass weatherboards and equipped with a standard hardtop.
On the flybridge Carver has opted for a forward midships helm position with pedestal seats for the captain and co-pilot. To starboard our test boat was equipped with the optional wet bar and icemaker. Additional seating up top is provided by an L-shaped lounge aft on the starboard side.
Measuring about six feet by 11 feet, the aft deck is big enough for a table and chairs. As well, it  provides easy access to the swim platform, the side decks and cabin.
On the foredeck I like the optional Maxwell windlass with foot controls, mounted in a recessed area; the 35 lb. Delta anchor sits securely in chocks,
out of the way while you’re manoeuvring in tight quarters. Boarding the Carver 346 from the side, though, is a bit of a challenge.
Carver’s expertise in designing elegant yet functional cabins is very evident in the 346. The cherrywood interior is nicely highlighted by 65-ounce nylon carpeting, granite countertops, and Ultraleather upholstery on the salon sofa and lounge. The aft cabin features an angled queen island berth, two bedside end tables, a large hanging locker with shelves and its own head with shower stall and vanity.
The forward cabin has excellent ventilation and a good-sized angled double berth, hanging lockers to port and starboard, plenty of drawer and shelf storage and its own entrance to the forward head. Three steps down from the salon, the forward head/shower compartment is to port and galley to starboard. Carver equips the galley with a two-burner Princess stove, waste container and deep stainless steel sink, all with flush-fit covers to increase counter space. There is also a coffeemaker and full-size refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom.
Not only does the wide beam of the Carver 346 allow for lots of room belowdecks, the 13-foot, 2-inch beam delivers impressive stability both at rest and at cruising speed. The 346 was up and on plane in a respectable 7.17 seconds, but what impressed me most was how the 346 could maintain itself on plane at only 15.2 mph.
With the twin MerCruiser MX 6.2 MPIs turning 3,400 rpm, the Carver 346 settled into a very comfortable cruising speed of 17.7 mph. Running in a moderate chop, we ran the 346 in every possible direction; as expected, handling was solid, even in a beam sea.
The introduction of the 346 Aft Cabin Motor Yacht, with its contemporary exterior styling, elegant interior and efficient hull clearly solidifies Carver’s reputation as the leader in aft cabin cruisers.
