Living aboard is a romantic concept but one that
often doesnt work out too well when you actually try it. Anyone who
has ended a weeks stay on a small cruiser feeling cramped, grubby,
under-slept and with food, clothes and gear all over the place knows
what we mean.
But it might be worth a try on Rinkers latest version of the 34-foot Fiesta Vee. The boat is spacious, making full use of a majestic 12-foot beam and a high freeboard that allows for 80 inches of headroom in the main cabin. Both the forward V-berth and the berth under the aft deck are roomy and open, the beds comfy and welcoming. Out back, the lounge area provides a room-like setting, and theres always the sun deck on the bow if you need to get away from the crowd. Even the helm seat is ample, wide enough for two adults or for the captain and the kids.
The head is a real bathroom. Theres room to move around and the stand-up shower has its own separate space and a door!
Food preparation on this Rinker should be a pleasure. The galley includes a stainless-steel sink, refrigerator/ freezer, a two-burner electric cooktop, a microwave and a coffee maker. Outside in the aft lounge area, theres a wet bar nicely moulded into the starboard side behind the helm station, complete with sink, fridge, blender and a garbage compartment. (Shore power is not required. The appliances can run off the quiet 5KW generator.)
Eat outside in the commodious cockpit, or if the bugs or the weather
drive you inside theres a large moulded Corian table with seating for four. Two skylights in the galley, another large one over the V-berth and three portholes let in the air and the natural light.
After dinner, load some music into the 6-CD player or turn on the TV and relax. Too hot for you? Too chilly? A 16,000 BTU heat pump provides both heat and a/c.
The Fiesta Vee would be a winner in any on-board storage contest as hideaways for your stuff abound; the upholstery, while handsome, cushy and beautifully sewn, is easy to clean; a central-vac system comes with enough hose to reach anywhere on the boat.
Any of these features could be incorporated onto a houseboat sedan cruiser. Living aboard the Rinker, youre living aboard a boat with an efficient 18-degree V bottom that runs, rides and handles like a huge
runabout. Its fast, although our recorded top speed was restricted by bottom algae; 48-49 mph is probably more like it. Its quick take at least a second off our acceleration times with a clean hull.
And the price is right. Rinker has managed to package this cruiser with a complete list of standard equipment for under two hundred grand.
