2002 Campion Explorer 682 SC Description
Campion Boats of Kelowna, B.C., likes to refer to its Explorer fishing/diving/adventure line as Sport Utility boats.
Using that analogy, if the company’s shapely 602, introduced a couple of years ago, could be compared to an Acura MDX, the new Explorer 682 is definitely a Hummer.  While the 23’1” 602 is all up-to-the-minute design with curvy  lines, “signature” built-in docking lights and a swing-away fishing seat, the 26’ 2” 682 is all hard edges and beefed-up appointments.
It’s a boat built with offshore fishing and serious weekend adventures in mind. Its high topsides add a feeling of security in the cockpit while the APEX hull helps ensure tight handling characteristics, swift planing and good top speeds.
Although initially designed for sterndrive power, the boat also works well when powered by a bracket-mounted outboard. The test boat, equipped with the husky optional hardtop, was powered by Yamaha’s new 225-hp four-stroke F225, mounted on an a welded-aluminum bracket.
For starters, the boat is incredibly quiet, registering only 79 decibels at the helm while cruising at 4,000 rpm (81 dbA in the aft cockpit area) and 84 dbA at the helm at top speed (only 86 dbA in the aft cockpit area). Exceptionally quiet.
The outboard also produces satisfying performance, with a top speed of 45.7 mph at 6,000 rpm. Tabs made little difference in acceleration tests, but are sure to be handy in compensating for crossing or quartering wind or waves or for balancing out loads.
Handling is tight (as expected with a Neil Gilbert-designed APEX hull) and further enhanced by the bracket-mounted outboard that adds a couple of feet of leverage in quick turns. Addition of the bracket brings the boat’s effective length to over 26 feet.  As well as contributing to the boat’s performance, the bracket really opens up the aft area of the cockpit for fishing.
There’s a full-width aft bench seat in the cockpit, easily removable for fishing, with a transom door to starboard (for easy boarding or bringing in really big fish). There’s a baitwell in the aft deck to port (an aeration unit is needed.) Fishwells are also located beneath a jump seat to starboard, located behind the  swiveling helm seat, and to port, beneath the side-hinged lounge seat (the whole unit lifts). Rod-holders in the coamings are built to handle heavy tackle and there are also a pair of salmon-sized lined and drained fish lockers in the cockpit floor, to port and starboard.
The optional hardtop enclosure, sure to be popular with Great Lakes and coastal fishing folks, is built around a sturdy aluminum frame, with large,
sliding side windows for ventilation. There’s plenty of room in the forward area of the hardtop for electronics and the top is high enough to let the helmsman drive while standing. I’m a six-footer, however, and found I could use a couple more inches of headroom.
While the cabin is a bit less rugged, it also takes a workmanlike approach, with a roomy but comfortable V-berth/dinette forward, a mini-galley complete with sink, alcohol stove and icebox to port and a marine head to aft to starboard. With the proper head and holding tank, plenty of storage, convertible V-berth and the convertible port-side sleeper seat in the cockpit, a couple with a child or three fishing buddies could comfortably live aboard for a long weekend.
Can’t do that with a Hummer.
