2002 Godfrey Aqua Patio 240 LE Description
Some of the most versatile craft on the water these days don’t have a pointy end at the bow or a hull that looks anything like a traditional boat. Pontoon boats can handle almost any sort of waterfront duty, but rely on aluminum “logs” for their steady ride and largely on outboards for power.
Once limited to a role as slow-but-spacious party barges, pontoons have come a long way. With a hefty outboard on the transom, a pontoon can easily do duty as a recreational towboat for wakeboarders, tube-riders and even waterskiers. With a more modest motor, they make fine day-cruisers.
The Godfrey Aqua Patio 240 LE is perfectly capable of going both ways. The test boat, powered by a 60-hp Yamaha F60 four-stroke outboard, fell into the slow-but-rarin’-to-go department.
Rated for outboard power up to 140-hp, the 240 LE will run at about 35 mph with a 135-hp engine; a 125 gives it a top speed of 28-30 mph. That’s in water-ski speed territory.
As for the test boat, it topped out at 18.2 mph in radar-checked speed trials. That’s fast enough to pull a junior wakeboarder or tube-riders. The reality, though, is that the F60, with cruising speeds of 11-13 mph, makes the boat an ideal day-cruiser, an island of relaxation.
The four-stroke Yamaha offers the added bonus of near-silent operation. The boat registers only 73 decibels at the helm and 75 decibels at the aft end of the cockpit at 4,000-rpm (11.1 mph). Readings at top speed rise to  only 79 dbA at the helm and 82 dbA in the aft seat.
You can make more use of the Sony four-channel, 45-watt AM-FM-CD player.
As for space and comfort, the 240 LE is running at the head of the pontoon pack. There are entry gates to port and starboard amidships and a central gate at the bow, for easy access. There’s a platform forward for boarding, swimming and convenient line-handling.
The comfort factor really comes into play  with the seating, starting with a comfy, fully adjustable captain’s seat. With the L-shaped bench seat aft and the two full-length facing settees forward and standard pontoon fare, Godfrey adds extras. By angling the aft ends of the forward benches and the port-side forward end of the aft  bench, the builder creates  three decadently comfortable chaise lounges. With a crowd on board, the boat will comfortably seat a dozen adults. With just four or five, the benches and aft sunpad give everyone aboard a very comfortable place to stretch out.
The shape of the chaise-lounge units also allows Godfrey to add easily accessed storage units. The chaise lounge unit at the forward end of the aft seat provides space for a portable cooler.  A two-legged table turns the aft seating area into a casual dining space. Add an optional curtained change room (to starboard, beneath the sunpad) and you’re ready for a relaxing day on the water.
It’s like a stress-busting afternoon on the patio, but you’re out on the aqua.
