2002 Doral 210 BR Description
When Richard Graham, head of Doral’s sportboat unit, introduced the company’s new 21-foot bowrider last summer – while it was still under development – he called it “the sweetheart of our model line.” It was mid-November by the time I was able to test-drive the boat, but I had to agree: it’s good-looking, good-natured and well-behaved.
In 16- to 22-foot bowriders, the design process is an exercise in getting the absolute most usable space out of the boat while honouring its use as a day-cruising towing and touring machine. The new Doral 210 does all that, while delivering 50-mph performance (in the test boat, equipped with a 5.0-litre V-8 sterndrive) and adding some extra-special features.
With swiveling buckets at the helm and companion positions, the boat is ready for towing duties. The U-shaped aft bench seating, though, makes it a real crowd-pleaser. It’s the sort of cockpit arrangement usually found only in runabouts 23 feet and up, but works well in the 210 BR. (In fact, the design perfected in the 210 BR is also being translated into a 23-footer. Same layout, just about two feet longer.)
The 210 BR’s real appeal, however, is in the details that in some instances, can’t be seen at first glance. Immediately visible is the new signature Doral sportboat hull design, seen most clearly in the teardrop-shaped pattern on the aft quarter-panels. It’s a “look” that is evident throughout the sportboat line (making the boats immediately recognizable as Dorals) and is reminiscent of the styling seen in the
    company’s cruisers.
Less obvious are features like walkways that ease traffic on and off the boat. Aft, a section of the padded engine-hatch/sunpad flips aside to reveal a fibreglass walkway with moulded-in non-skid, making it easy to get on and off the boat from the swim platform. Forward, there’s a round step at seat-level and a patch of non-skid right at the bow that eases passage forward.
Also less than obvious at first glance are the storage lockers built into the helm and companion consoles. With doors that double as seat-backs in the open bow area, the compartments are ideal for storing fenders, lines, or a
    picnic pack.
Then there’s Doral Full Flotation Liner (FFL) construction, apparent only in clean and fully lined lockers and bilges. Because the system also includes foam-filled cavities between deck and hull, the huge drained storage spaces created to port and starboard under the aft seat can also double as ice-chests. Other benefits of the 210’s design are a fully accessible engine
compartment and hull-deck joints cemented together with high-tech Plexus compound.
On the water, the FFL system contributes to the boat’s smooth performance in big waves and nasty weather (test day was in November) and quiet ride (the foam and  close construction tolerances do an exceptional job of dampening engine and wave noise).
I just had a short get-acquainted date with the 210 BR, but I have to agree, it’s pretty sweet.
