2002 Stanley 22 Sport Tug Description
For folks who love tugboats – the plumb-bowed workhorses of lake and ocean – there’s nothing like the real thing. But if you really need a boat capable of planing speed, with a dry inside steering station, room for at least three passengers and the ability to haul or push small barges in a pinch… well, you’d probably be stumped. Until now.
One of the great advantages of building welded aluminum boats on a semi-custom basis is being able to fulfil a wide range of sometimes-quirky requests. The request that spawned the Stanley Sport Tug 22 was for a capable “crew boat” for a Georgian Bay tugboat-operator, that would look right at home docked alongside a tugboat.
The resulting boat would also work well for any pleasure-boater who appreciates its salty good looks and all-weather capabilities.
At 22 feet long, with a bracket-mounted outboard engine and a generous nine-foot, two-inch beam, Stanley’s 22’ Sport Tug looks every inch the sturdy workboat. Its high topsides contribute to a muscular appearance – as do the pushing bracket at the bow and the sturdy towing bit on the transom and its sturdy welded cleats look right at home with thick poly line.
As for the wheelhouse, it’s a haven from the elements with full-size sliding doors port and starboard. The forward-canted windshield and crown trim on the roof are clear tugboat design signatures, while vintage large chrome searchlights and a couple of  cowl vents (from the owner’s personal collection) add more salty flavour.
Inside the wheelhouse, the driver feels just like a commercial captain, with
mid-ship wheel placement, a broad seat and full standing room. Large windows provide all-round visibility and the windshield wiper works well.
The 15-degree modified-V hull ensures a comfortable ride in the nasty stuff (we had a mix of calm and rough water on test day) and broad chines keep the ride dry and stable.
Top speed, with the Honda 130 outboard, was 36.7 mph at 5,200 rpm. While the owner was satisfied with the performance, the builders were planning to swap props to improve both the hole shot and top end. The boat was running a 17-inch three-blade aluminum prop on test day, and a 15- or 16-inch pitch prop would doubtless improve planing and top speed. Cruising speeds on test day were 18.4 mph at 3,500 rpm, 21.1 mph at 4,000 rpm and 25.8 mph at 4,500 rpm.
The bracket-mounted engine works quietly and efficiently – almost silently at idle. Cruising speeds produce decibel readings of 81 dbA at the helm station in the wheelhouse and 85 dbA near the transom. Even at top speeds, helm readings only reached 81 dbA, while readings in the aft area of the cockpit were 93 dbA.
Anyone operating a boat like this will want to have a hauser or two handy, so there’s plenty of storage space aboard – under the full-width wheelhouse back seat, under the jump seat forward of the wheelhouse and in a bow locker.
If work comes your way, you want to be ready.
