2002 Glastron GX 205 Description
We’re going to hear a lot about “VEC”  in the next few years. VEC was developed by Genmar which produces both Larson and Glastron.  And it’s likely that VEC variants will revolutionize the production boat industry.
The acronym stands for “Virtual Engineered Composites.” In this case the composite is  familiar fibreglass, which is a combination of spun glass mat or cloth bonded in a plastic epoxy resin. What’s new is the virtual engineering. Computers are involved in VEC boats from conception to final inspection. The hull shapes are “drawn” with CAD/CAM programs and the three-dimensional result is used to drive robotic tools that carve the moulds. The finished hull, therefore, is extremely faithful to the original design. All glass fabrics, wood components and upholstery materials are cut by computer-controlled equipment, increasing accuracy and reducing waste.
The heart of the VEC process is the “closed-mould” cell. Closed-cell moulding holds pressure and temperature at an optimum constant, yielding consistent thickness, great strength, and a mirror finish. The sealed and vented cell reduces styrene emissions by 90 percent and eliminates the workers’ need for respirators and other protective gear. Within the cell, sculptured floatation foam, a stringer system and the floor are bonded into a single, integrated, fibreglass part.
Our first exposure to a VEC - produced boat was Glastron’s GX205. Just sitting in the sun at its mooring, the substantial - looking bowrider shows immediate evidence of VEC-related quality. Any hot-rodder devoted to perfect paint would look over the Glastron and exclaim, “Man, this thing is straight!”
A more obvious VEC-related feature is the full fibreglass floor. It’s done up with a non-skid texture and then covered with carpet that snaps out for cleaning.
We were intrigued by the innovative seating arrangement. Two bucket-type seats up front are joined by a stern bench with adjoining side benches, creating a practical U-shaped area. Plus, a cushion can be installed between the two side seats to create a very large sun lounge.
There was also a goodly number of what we’ve come to term “car-like” accents – storage nets instead of bins, carbon fibre trim and so on. While we’d be the last to discourage the boating industry from emulating automotive techniques and build quality, we think these touches have a “non-boaty” feel.
We couldn’t find anything to carp about in the GX205’s performance, however. The 5.0-litre Volvo Penta makes this spacious runabout stand up and give notice, with a top speed of almost 55 mph. The light weight of this boat and engine combo are further evidence of VEC design that translates directly into performance.
The svelte hull, however, gives away nothing in terms of strength and rigidity. On the contrary, when we slalomed the GX205 across its own wake, it handled easily and betrayed no shake or shudder. The lack of water noise was another indicator that the VEC hull was doing its job.
