2002 Sea Doo Sportboat Utopia 205 Description
When Bombardier introduces a new Sea-Doo boat or personal watercraft, it usually does so with a bold public flourish, after the boat has been well-tested and proven and kept under tight wraps. The company’s new sportboats and personal watercraft often just seem to “appear” full-blown.
Last year’s introduction of the Utopia 185, however, was nowhere near that smooth, perhaps because the boat, with its intentionally conservative lines meant to look more like a “regular boat” (meaning a regular prop-driven boat), was a departure for Sea-Doo.
Photos of the boat first appeared showing an almost flat windscreen with movable side wind-deflector panels; the designers – after years of doing “leading-edge” work – were obviously having trouble with “mainstream.”  The windscreen that appeared on the completed boat was a wraparound design with high side panels – distinctive, but conservative by comparison to Bombardier’s usual low-profile designs.
As for the rest of the boat, it was well-laid-out, with wide, swiveling front seats that swung around to turn the entire cockpit into a large U-shaped lounge. It seemed to prove that a conservative, family-oriented bowrider could also be innovative. Performance was lively; handling (after all, it was still a jet-powered runabout) was sporty.
From some angles, though, the Utopia 185 looked foreshortened and “boxy.”
The Utopia 205 solves that design dilemma neatly by maintaining the eight-foot beam of the 185 and adding 16 inches of length. It doesn’t seem like much but makes a world of difference. In appearance, the 205 is sleeker and more streamlined; the cockpit lounge, instead of feeling cramped, is genuinely spacious. With the forward seats swivelled 90 degrees and the cockpit table in place, the 205’s cockpit is an ideal conversation area for four or five adults or a lunchroom for a busy boating family.
True to its Sea-Doo roots, the 205 cockpit’s full fibreglass liner makes it simple to maintain; there are easily accessible storage spaces everywhere. The standard Bimini top stores neatly out of the way under the engine hatch/sunpad. It doesn’t have to be removed and dropped into the storage space like most (a job for two)  but slides away easily. There’s a newly designed instrument panel at the helm with an easy-to-read and accurate speedometer.
Performance, with the 250-hp Mercury OptiMax M2 jet drive in the  engine compartment, is, predictably enough, similar to the 185.  The 185 I tested with a 200-hp OptiMax engine had a top speed of 48.3 mph  at 5,900 rpm. The Utopia 205 I drove, with a 250-hp OptiMax under the hood, 220 pounds heavier and 16 inches longer, topped out at 48.6 mph
    at 6,000 rpm.
The extra length and extra 40 hp really helped the 205 in acceleration; it got up and ran to 20 mph in 2.75 seconds, reaching 30 mph in 4.87 seconds and 40 mph in 6.94 seconds. (The 185 had hit 20 mph in 3.62 seconds, 30 mph in  5.87 seconds and 40 mph in 8.24 seconds.)
Performance is much more than acceleration, though, and the 205 handles short chop and large ocean waves much better than its smaller sibling while maintaining the ability to spin and play at will. It may look a little less like a “jetboat” than some other Sea-Doo sportboats, but it still knows how to play.
