2002 Svfara SV609 Description
Is there room for a new boat company in the extremely competitive tournament ski and wakeboard market? Quite likely, if it’s as good a value as the SV609 from Svfara Marine of Calgary.
Starting with the traditional mid-engine design, the SV609’s cockpit is typical – well-padded seats, plenty of storage areas and easy access.
High praise goes to the SV609’s helm; the roto-molded driver’s seat should provide comfort for long shifts behind the wheel and the single lever Morse shifter/throttle is well-positioned. Principal gauges are all visible, secondary gauges and switches are all easy to see and reach, as is the premium Clarion six-speaker sound system. The two Borg Warner competition analog speedometers are computer-balanced. The aluminum ski pylon is in easy reach of both the driver and spotter and the swivel feature where the rope connects should reduce wear and tear on expensive towlines.
The two-person port side rear-facing observer’s seat, in addition to being well-padded, provides easy access to a very large ski/wakeboard storage area. Borrowing an idea from fishing boats, Svfara has cleverly designed the full width rear cockpit seat as a large storage area; the seat can be totally removed to increase cockpit space. Lift the upholstered rear sun lounge and there is another large storage area, big enough to hold skis or wakeboards plus the hot and cold transom shower.
Breaking from the traditional port side/starboard side bow seating, Svfara has opted for a forward facing bench seat that yields one large storage area instead of two small ones, and plenty of legroom. Passengers in the bow will appreciate their own drinkholders, a pair of stereo speakers and well-placed recessed grabhandles.
Standard power in the SV609 is MerCruiser’s 350 MAG MPI SKI, rated at 315 hp and mated to a Velvet Drive transmission with 1:1 gear ratio. Standard propeller is a four-blade stainless steel 13” x 13 1/2”.  This power and prop combination planes the SV609 in 4.2 seconds with negligible bow lift.
Using the two tournament speedometers and a handheld GPS, we ran an average wakeboarding speed of 20 mph at 2,200 rpm, and skiing speeds of 30 mph at 2,900 rpm and 36 mph at 3,500 rpm. At 4,800 rpm we recorded a top speed of 46 mph on the brand new MerCruiser engine.
The SV609 delivered strong on-water handling in every manoeuvre we put it through. Credit the SV609’s computer-designed hull that controls water flow underneath through channels that aid in tracking. Triple bronze fins located on the keel slightly ahead of mid-ship provide additional tracking control.
Although Svfara primarily set out to design and build a first-class tournament ski boat, we got the opportunity to test its wakeboarding capabilities. Equipped with the optional custom wakeboard tower and expert rider Ryan Augustine in tow, we found the SV609 had excellent take-off power and provided a wake with the desired “ramp” effect that had Ryan flying upside-down with ease.
Today’s active water sports families ski, tube, wakeboard and cruise; the Svfara SV609  will help them do all that, but for thousands of dollars less than many other tournament-style towboats.
