2002 Edgewater 185 DC Description
EdgeWater owners are a confident lot. They are sure of what lies beneath.
While still gaining a name for itself in this vast continent, this small, Florida-based boat company has captured the hearts and heads of those who pride themselves on owning a well-constructed, safe runabout.
Competing head-to-head with some major players in the small to mid-size fishing/ runabout business, EdgeWater knows what has to be done to convert  those loyal to more recognizable builders. Its founder has been there, done that, worked for other companies and set out to build a better boat.
With boats like the 185DC, Bob Dougherty’s dream is alive and building momentum. This ever-so-beamy variable deadrise hull is a solid match for anything in its class.
EdgeWater boats are completely wood-free, incorporating solid composite transoms. While most builders bond foam to fibreglass, EdgeWater adheres the ’glass to the foam for superior strength. The floor is Whaleboard backed, there’s an integrated stringer system and the hardware is through-bolted – right down to the hinges.
Extensive use of non-skid fibreglass ensures one remains sure-footed, be it forward when stepping onto the bow’s wide gunwale, or throughout the cockpit. The 185DC’s high, stainless steel rails are designed to surround the entire bowrider area, adding another level of security to those who cast a line.
White and bright, the boat’s monotone colour scheme extends to the upholstery, fibreglass, and plastic components – broken only by the dark tones of its engine and accompanying instruments and controls.
The floor layout takes advantage of the hull’s wide beam. Every seat is well-positioned, securely fastened and thoughtfully spaced for a fisherman’s needs. Of note are the aft jump seats that extend well back to the transom and offer great support.
Standard features include a self-bailing cockpit, an anti-splash lip for storage forward,  S/S steering wheel with finger grips, gunwale-mounted rod boxes, and deluxe pedestal seats. Our test boat was configured with an optional portside back-to-back lounge. 316 SS heavy-duty hardware is used throughout.
Powered by a Yamaha 115 hp, four-stroke, fuel-injected outboard, the 185DC has plenty of pep. GPS dialed in a maximum speed of 42.3 mph. With a 0-35 mph acceleration time of just over 10 seconds, the hull pops out of the water quickly and cuts through it nicely.  When trimmed up, there’s plenty of built-in lift, giving it a solid, dry ride.
With steering that doesn’t make your arms ache, the hull tracks well and generally performs as one would hope. I could enter a turn flat out, crank the wheel and come out at 33 mph – which means it only lost nine mph in the process of dragging its bow, followed by the rest of the boat, through the water.
Acceleration tests included passes from 20 to 30 mph in 4.8 seconds, 30 to 40 mph in 8.3 seconds. Adding the low-range and mid-range speeds together takes just slightly longer than if the power is maintained throughout 20 to 40 mph. This test was accomplished in 12.12 seconds, indicating a very consistent and smooth powerband throughout the ranges.
This is a comfortable, nine-person boat that mixes entertainment and utility. It can tow a tube, pull a skier, be your best fishing buddy or take you to dinner in style. Of course boats like this are almost too popular with too many people – reservations may be required.
