2002 Doral 186 BR Description
Doral has long been known as Canada’s busiest production builder of cruisers, with a line of express yachts from 25 to 36 feet that rivals the best built anywhere. While building the cruiser side of the business into a world-class operation, though, Doral’s sportboat line was under-
    populated.
Many first-time boaters, or at least those classified as “intro-level” buyers, want a sterndrive-powered runabout that sells for close to $20,000; Doral’s smallest sterndrive boat, the 190, had a price tag closer to $30,000.
All of that has changed over the past year as Doral split up its cruiser and sportboat manfacturing efforts, leaving cruiser construction at the Grand-Mere, Que., plant and building an expanded line of sport boats at a new plant in Owen Sound, Ont.
One of the first new sportboats to come out of the Owen Sound R&D department is the 186 BR. Powered by a V-6 MerCruiser sterndrive, the 18-and-a-half-footer is sure to be a hit with new and experienced boaters alike.
I drove the prototype 186 BR on Ontario’s Georgian Bay last summer: it handled like a charm and had a nice turn of speed, topping out at 49 mph in radar-verified trials. The boat begins to come onto plane at 2,200 rpm and when slowing down, remains on plane to that level as well. That’s always a good sign.
Just as good is the ability to handle close turns at nearly full speed, at close to optimum running trim. The 186 BR always held tight in the corners and never tried to break loose, a sign of good strake placement and hull geometry. It handled some good-sized Georgian Bay rollers as well as any other 18-footer I have driven. In other words, the boat’s performance is no problem.
Acceleration was adequate: 20 mph in just over five seconds, 30 mph in just over seven seconds and 40 mph in under 10 seconds. It should improve in the production boat, which will be significantly lighter with the introduction of Doral’s Full Flotation Liner (FFL) system. Sound levels were good at cruising speeds, 83 decibels at the helm station at 3,500 rpm and 85 dbA in the aft cockpit area. Top speed sound readings of 93 dbA at the helm and 96 dbA in the aft cockpit area will doubtless improve in the production model.
As for the cockpit layout, it’s pretty well standard-issue Doral fare, which is to say there are deeply cushioned sculpted-foam seats – off-white vinyl with blue trim and silver piping on the test boat – swiveling bucket seats forward, a broad bench seat aft and more comfortable seating and capacious storage space in the bow area.
Woodgrain inserts in the dashboard, coamings and steering wheel hub add a touch of luxury.
With a broad swim platform, plenty of drinkholders, grabrails and a cockpit floor ski locker, the 186 BR is ready for a day on the water. But beyond the performance traits and features that make it a good sportboat, the 186 BR also looks every inch a Doral. Boaters will immediatly recognize the boat as the newest sister in the sportboat family.
