2002 Lund 1675 Explorer SS Description
Elsewhere in this issue we review the 1675 Explorer’s impressive big brother, the burly 2025 Pro V. Although the two boats are dramatically
different in size, their mandate is the same – make it convenient, comfortable and safe to go fishing.
Safety is an important issue with responsible anglers. Fishing is a stand-up sport requiring a stable platform for casting and especially during those exciting moments when a fish is on. The Explorer makes good use of a broad beam that extends down from the gunwales to a wide (77.5 in./197cm) bottom surface. That, coupled with a moderate V, provides plenty of at-rest stability.
Catching fish is one thing, getting you and the stringer home in dirty weather is another. Wide, shallow, aluminum hulls have a deserved reputation for being noisy, wet and harsh riding. The 1675SS belies that with Lund’s trademark Integrated Power Strake design. It’s smooth, quiet and dry; the shape blasts water out to the sides. And it’s fast. Powered by the hushed horses of Honda’s four-stroke 75, our test boat vaulted out of the hole and fairly skimmed across Lake Muskoka. At trolling speeds, the Lund tracked well, requiring few corrections from the helm. The lack of hubbub from the idling Honda was almost eerie.
No amount of ride comfort in the hull goes noticed, however, if your backside has been numbed-out by one of those torture devices that often passes for a fishing station seat. Lund tackled that one head-on for 2002 with the creation of Premium Pedestal seats. Stylish, with colour-coordinated upholstery inserts, these lushly cushioned thrones actually fit the human physique. Moreover, their substantial construction ensures years of reliable use.
Fishing convenience is, of course, what these aluminum skiffs are all about. Five years ago the aluminum boat industry was scrambling to catch up with the features found on any fibreglass bass boat. The result on too many alloy fishing craft was a poorly laid-out dog’s breakfast of baitwells, livewells, platforms and storage all slavishly coated with cheap outdoor carpet.
Lund puts its quality marine carpet where it belongs, on the floor; the rest is anodized or coated with tough paint. On the SS there are six seat base options for the two seats including one in the bow and another on a stern casting platform that neatly doubles as two aerated livewells. Plug-in wiring for a bow trolling motor is standard along with a battery holder located under the floor. There are eight storage areas including dual rod storage compartments located along the sides.
Moulded consoles find their best use in an aluminum boat, adding a touch of style and utility that can’t be crafted in metal. The Explorer’s side helm station can be fully equipped with instrumentation, including GPS and the all-important fishfinder. But it also will accept VHF or a stereo/radio. The wraparound windshield (at speed it actually blocks the wind!) snaps off and stores under the console to clear the space for trolling and casting.
If you can’t catch fish from this boat, you can’t catch fish.
