2002 Sea Doo PWC GTX 4-TEC Description
Two-stroke engines – which burn an oil and gasoline mixture and finish fuel/air intake, compression, combustion and exhaust in two strokes or two cycles of the piston – are simple and reliable.
But without modern fuel and oil-injection technology, two-strokes have far greater emissions than four-stroke engines, in which fuel/air intake, compression, combustion and exhaust each have their own stroke or cycle.
And for some people, even the development of advanced two-stroke technology hasn’t been enough. Sea-Doo’s answer to those critics came last summer in the form of the GTX 4-TEC, its three-seat personal watercraft (PWC), with a newly designed hull and a 155-hp four-stroke, 1.494-cc marine engine.
With top speeds of over 50 mph and plenty of bottom-end torque for towing water-skiers and wakeboarders, the GTX 4-TEC has nimble handling, but is still capable of smoothing out some pretty big waves. The boat’s new hull has enough V to take on wind and weather, but with strakes and chines that ensure water-hugging cornering and crisp hole-shots.
Because Rotax, Bombardier’s Austrian-based engine-maker, has been building four-strokes for years, for use in motorcycles and ATVs, the engine project was not daunting. The three-cylinder engine has 12 valves, sequential multiport fuel injection and tuned plenum intake. Its cooling system operates through a closed loop in the boat’s ride plate.
The engine has also been designed with something called the tip-over protection system (TOPS) to stop crankcase oil from flowing into the combustion chambers, or out into the water, should the machine turn over.
In the alphabet soup of new developments, the 4-TEC also has O.P.A.S., the off-power assisted steering system that consists of two spring-mounted rudders. O.P.A.S. gives a PWC driver steering ability when  the machine loses power, or when the driver backs off the throttle but still wants to turn the boat.
Available in blue or red colour schemes, the new GTX has a sharp modern design to go along with those four environmentally friendly reasons to buy it.
