For 2002, Polaris has concentrated its efforts on
performance and value. This is a category that is one of the biggest
challenges in the watercraft industry: providing acceptable performance
at a competitive price.
At 100 hp, the new 800 DI is no slouch. Best of all
it meets EPA 2006 compliance standards, burning only 2.9 gallons per
hour at 5,000 rpm. This equates to approximately 126 miles to a tank.
Running on only 87 octane fuel, the engine produces 76 percent lower
emissions.
Other features of the engine are instant starts, no
bogging after extended idle, automatic temperature and altitude
compensator. Definitely an efficient powerplant.
Polaris did not forget the noise factor. In fact,
the company boasts a 60-percent reduction in sound pressure level with
12 quarter-wave tuned resonators cancelling out unwanted noise
frequencies with no loss of power. This system is called PLANET,
Polaris Low Acoustic Noise Technology and is featured on all Polaris
runabout models.
This yearÂ’s model has 20 improvements over previous
years. More attention was put into fit and finish, which is
visible around hood latches and compartment lids and other control
functions. The electric bilge pump is a definite benefit, which has a
manual override just in case there is a little too much play. A
new 23-mode multi-function display tells you more things than you can
imagine; this is a nice touch.
The reverse gate has been redesigned to provide
superior steering control with more thrust when reversing, very handy
when approach a dock or backing off a trailer. When it comes to
handling, the Virage I utilizes a proven full V-hull design with a bat
plate ride plate.
Specially shaped sponsons help to create an edge in
which the watercraft can corner. That means the Virage I handles well
in all water conditions yet is stable in rough water. After four
years of developing its DI technology, Polaris seems to have a proven
performer on its hands. Addressing the environmental, noise, economy
and range issues, Polaris has put together a very affordable package
with full features. The Virage I hits the market as a true performance,
value watercraft.
