Building a fishing boat that earns the respect of anglers, while also meeting
basic family boating needs, inevitably means compromise.
Winnipeg-based aluminum boat builder Misty River shifts the odds in its favour by first pushing the design envelope of the hull. Its new 16-foot, 4-inch Phoenix has a wide-body 7-foot, 9-inch beam, so theres much more interior space to play with.
The Phoenix has a solidly built, all-welded aluminum hull with an all-aluminum transom. Our 1693 test boat was a walk-through, equipped with the tall windscreen. Side console, dual console and conversion bow configurations are also available.
Misty Rivers parent company is in the aluminum stamping and extrusion business, so its not surprising to find wide extruded aluminum gunwales, grooved to provide a good grip when you step aboard. The test boats sharp off-white hull with silver and black accents is also a testament to the companys familiarity with aluminum finishing techniques.
In fishing mode, the boat has swivelling helm and companion seats, with additional mounting sockets fore and aft. Carpeted floors and casting platforms provide solid footing. Five large storage lockers in the bow casting
platform, including a centre rod locker, will keep gear out of the way.
The livewell is located in the aft port-side area of the aft casting platform, with the battery in a locker to starboard. Once fishing equipment is stored and tubes and other water toys ready, its time to convert to all-round recreation
mode.
With the aft livewell emptied and locker doors closed, the forward part of the aft casting platform hinges backwards to reveal a threeplace bench seat. The Phoenix is ready to play.
The test boat, equipped with Suzukis DF140 four-stroke, four-cylinder outboard, has all the power and performance needed for fishing, watersports or all-round fun. In acceleration tests, the boat is on plane at 20 mph in just over four seconds and at 30 mph in less than six seconds. At 3000 rpm, the boat runs at 21.6 mph, in the right range for wakeboarding. At 3500 rpm, it cruises at 27.5 mph, fine for water-skiing.
Top speed is 45.8 mph at 6000 rpm. Sound levels are low at cruising speeds registering 82 dbA at the helm at 4000 rpm. At top speed, partly due to boat and wind noise in choppy test conditions, sound levels are 92 dbA at the helm.
The muscular performance of Suzukis 140 is a good fit for Misty Rivers Phoenix. Whether you want a platform for family fishing or all round fun in wide-open spaces, the wide-body 1693 Phoenix is worth a closer look.
