2008 Four Winns Horizon 180 Description
Michigan-based boatbuilder Four Winns has long been known for design innovation.
With 28 boats in its lineup, ranging in size up to 50 feet, Four Winns has plenty of things to get right. One of its biggest challenges, though, is the smallest boat in its lineup. As a family runabout, it has to do a great number of things at an affordable price. It has to be a great watersports boats and a comfortable day-cruiser that could also take the kids fishing. It’s a tall order, but one that the Horizon 180 fills nicely.
Our test boat, a Four Winns H180 powered by a MerCruiser 4.3 Litre Turn Key Start sterndrive, had plenty of desirable standard features, including two-tone hull colour and a trailer with surge brakes. It also had a sport interior, optional wakeboard tower and Bimini, plus an optional appearance package, extended swim platform and snap-in carpet – all options I would recommend. The price, however, is still well under $30,000.
Delivering a lot of boat for the money is one way to appeal to new boaters. The welloptioned H180 test boat does that in spades, while also performing well.
With Merc’s well-proven 4.3-litre V6 under the hatch, the H180 hits 20 mph in under five seconds and 30 mph in under eight seconds. Top speed, with one person onboard and about a quarter-tank of fuel, is 48.2 mph on GPS (showing just over 50 mph on the speedo). The boat cruises nicely at 35 mph at 3500 rpm. At 3000 to 3200 rpm, it’s right in the range for waterskiing at 28 to 30 mph. And at 2500 rpm, the boat is on plane and running at 20.7 mph, ideal for wakeboarding.
The fact that the boat is still on plane and running at 20 mph at 2500 rpm is a testament to the Four Winns Stable-Vee hull, with extended “pods” aft providing an extra-long running surface. Reverse chines that are also part of the Stable-Vee package give added lateral stability and improve cornering. It’s a well-proven hull and its usefulness really shines through on the H180.
The cockpit seats are comfortable, with lifting bolster bottoms on the swivelling helm and companion seats. The Sunsport seating with an aft bench seat and wide sun lounge means giving up some legroom. In exchange you get two huge partitioned storage areas alongside the engine. The bow seating area is small but comfortable (perfect for the kids).
Tubing and wakeboarding enthusiasts will love the tower and the extended swim platform. If everyone starts getting big air and wants bigger, add an aftermarket ballast system and you’ll be set.
