2008 Glastron GXL 185 Description
Madonna reminded us a few years ago that “we live in a material world.”
She really meant “materialistic,” but it just didn’t go with the music.
If you want to see materialism these days, there’s no place like Ontario’s Muskoka – big expensive cottages, big expensive cars, big expensive boats.
Guys who listened closely to Madonna’s lyrics, though, will know that, “The boy with the cold hard cash is always Mr. Right.” The Glastron GXL 185 looks great, runs fast and will still leave some cold hard cash in Mr. Right’s pockets. It’s an 18-footer capable of speeds over 50 mph that’s
well-designed and built, and costs less than $30,000.
The Glastron GXL 185, tested on Lake Joseph in the heart of Muskoka, was powered by a 4.3 MerCruiser MPI pushing a 21” pitch prop through an Alpha drive. The modified-V hull was solidly on plane at 2500 rpm at 24.4 mph – indicating a well-designed and easily driven hull. The boat also cruised easily at 31 mph at 3000 rpm and 38.6 mph at 3500 rpm, topping out at 53.2
mph at 5000 rpm. Those numbers are right on the money.
The GXL 185 is also a good bet from an actual construction material point of view. Like all small Glastrons, the GXL 185 is built using the VEC (Virtual Engineered Composites) process. Pioneered by Genmar Industries (Glastron’s parent company), VEC is a closed-mould fibreglass fabrication process that produces hulls and decks with consistent weight, strength and finish. The interior spaces of a VEC-built boat are as smooth and well-finished as the outside of the hull.
Other than the advanced technology used in its construction and the power-efficient hull design, the GXL 185 is fairly predictable. The cockpit is laid out with swivelling helm and companion seats, equipped with pull-up bolster-style seat-bottoms, a bench seat aft and a full-width sun lounge atop the engine hatch. The bow compartment has more seating with integrated storage lockers.
The upholstery is well-sculpted and comfortable, the textured cockpit carpet snaps in over a fibreglass liner, the helm is well laid-out with a tilting
woodgrain steering wheel and dashboard inserts, and the stereo is safely located in the glovebox.
The test boat’s engine is an upgrade from the standard 3.0-litre powerplant. Given the 4.3’s performance, it seems a good choice. The test boat also included an optional upgrade package with docking lights (a must in Muskoka), pop-up cleats and transom stereo remote and drive-trim switch.
From a material point of view, the test boat is good-looking and well-equipped. From a materialistic point of view, the price is right. It’s sure to be a hit.
