2008 Edgewater 188CC Description
It comes as no surprise that the popularity of outboard-powered centre console boats continues to rise. After all, by design, they are convenient to ride in, walk around, fish from and maintain.
Take, for example, the EdgeWater 188CC, a rugged yet handsome deep-V sport machine appropriately sized and powered for lakes in cottage country. Our test boat arrived bearing royal-blue gel-coated sides, a crisp white hull and matching interior. Frankly, it looked and felt significantly larger than its 18 foot 8 inch length and 7 foot 9 inch beam.
Like all EdgeWater boats, the 188CC is a one-piece unsinkable boat built with closed-cell foam floatation. To make it safer yet, the cockpit is deep, with securely fastened oversized handrails and first-rate hardware. From cleats to built-in rod holders to rocket launchers on the resilient canvas T-top, much thought has gone into placement.
EdgeWater’s philosophies and their customers’ expectations revolve around craftsmanship. Joints are tight, lids fit properly and compartments
are well finished inside and out.
The console itself is well engineered, housing the appropriate gauges, switches and controls. The operator’s seat is comfortable and effective – you can lean against it for ergonomic relief while standing or sit up high with excellent visibility.
With 66 square feet of cockpit space, there’s plenty of room for a console storage box, seat storage locker, console cooler seat and two transom quarter jump seats with durably upholstered cushions.
Anglers will appreciate the EdgeWater’s thick coaming pads when leaning over to land their big catch. Twenty-four inches of freeboard allows for large and convenient rod racks to be installed.
Mercury’s 150-hp supercharged Verado four-stroke outboard appears ideally suited to power the 188CC. Given the boat’s weight, it accelerates well and tops out at over 50 mph.
Out of the water and on plane in 2.9 seconds, the hull responds immediately to trim without prop ventilation during rapid acceleration. Being a Verado, power is smooth and consistent, helping the variable deadrise V-bottom rise effortlessly.
Thanks in part to a high entry forward, the ride is smooth and dry. Dry is good, especially in less than ideal temperatures. Large reverse chines deflect water beneath the running surface, again to improve stability and increase lift.
Driving in a straight line, the 188CC tracks predictably and sweeps beautifully through a turn when trimmed positive. Alternatively, it will turn tight with the engine trimmed in. It takes a fairly large wave to launch the hull, which feels solid when cutting through chop.
At EdgeWater, performance balances with versatility. The 188CC really does make an all around great family boat, even though some fishermen I know may not wish to admit it.
