2008 Crownline 19SS Description
Within the North American sportboat market, there are all sorts of manufacturers who claim to build upscale family bowriders. There are old companies, citing their history and know-how, and newer ones boasting a fresh approach to the business.
Celebrating its 18th year, Crownline has both experience and a vision for the future. They understand what boaters want – and what they need. Most importantly, they have the technology and resources to offer real product value.
Crownline’s sporty yet elegant 19 SS is proof. Its scale is ideal for most cottage lakes, not too big or too small. Under the hatch is MerCruiser’s trusty 4.3 MPI – an engine producing 220 horsepower and powerful enough to satisfy one’s need for speed.
Styling is important at Crownline, but quality takes precedence. All hardware used is certified by the National Marine Manufacturer’s Association and backed by an excellent warranty. Each component is selected for its durability and comfort, but what struck me first was the boat’s first-rate, wavefree finish.
I really like the look and feel of the 19’s bucket seats. In addition to being smartly designed, they are contemporary, cool and comfortable – a perfect match to the Crownline’s exterior lines.
Incorporating a number of performance features into its F.A.S.T. Tab hull design, Crownline meets its objective in combining form and function. Turning 4800 rpm, the 19 SS tops out at 50 mph.
Pushing 220 hp, the 19 SS accelerates well. Planing in 3.7 seconds, its hull rises for just a moment, then drops flat for perfect visibility. Arriving at 40 mph in only 10.6 seconds, the boat is truly a pleasure to drive, delivering a feeling of confidence and safety.
The 19 SS feels solid and heavy, but at approximately 3000 lbs, weight isn’t a factor. Its bucket seats keep you low inside the cockpit and well protected from the wind.
The engine performs superbly at midrange. Once on plane, I throttled up to speed at a steady pace before trimming the drive. The prop needs to bite before “putting the hammer down,” otherwise it will ventilate. Moving from 30 to 45 mph takes just seven seconds.
The 19’s bottom is engineered to corner almost as tight as a direct-drive towboat. Even when we found some rough water to cut through, the Crownline slalomed through the waves and carved an arc as if on rails.
With every Crownline comes a long list of standard features, including creative storage compartments, a cooler, anchor storage and a fully integrated extended swim platform.
The 19 SS is a level riding, solid performer with an upscale feel – you can expect to get what you pay for.
