2008 Stanley 20 Predator Description
Stanley’s all-welded aluminum boats, constructed in the family-owned
Connor Industries plant in Parry Sound, have built a world-class reputation for their unique combination of performance and practicality.
Stanley offers plenty of fine finishes and comfortable interior options, but the purest Stanley boats come with all-weather vinyl or Sunbrella-covered seats and unfinished aluminum hull and deck surfaces.
In the past, I have compared Stanley boats to various kinds of SUVs in an attempt to describe their rugged, practical attributes. This year’s test boat can only be compared to a three-quarterton pickup truck.
The 20 Predator, powered by a Yamaha F90 four-stroke outboard, is an all-out workhorse that will appeal to hunters and anglers carrying gear into water-access wilderness, as well as to water-access cottagers and waterfront contractors.
The Predator’s high slab-like topsides and Vbottom hull combine to provide load-carrying capacity of at least 1,200 pounds. The diamondplate floor is flat but angles upward towards the squared-off bow. Two retractable ramps are recessed into that angled area forward. Drive the boat up to any shore or dock, tie it securely, drop the ramps and drive an ATV, tractor, Bobcat or mini-backhoe into the cargo area.
Load the boat down with supplies, crew and groceries and you’ll be ready to put up that new addition at the cottage or camp.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a load of lumber, an ATV or a burly construction crew along on the test drive, but my knowledge of Stanley’s
V-hull tells me that this boat will go almost as fast and handle even better fully loaded.
With only a driver onboard, the 20 Predator reached a top speed of 39 mph at 5900 rpm. Cruising speeds are 21.4 mph at 3500 mph, 25.3 mph at 4000 rpm and 29.3 mph at 4500 rpm. Fully loaded, up on plane, you should be able to run easily at 25 to 30 mph.
Creature comforts are minimal. There’s a small welded aluminum console to starboard right aft, with a stainless-steel steering wheel and a tachometer, in front of a swivelling flip-up plastic and vinyl seat. The helm seat is mounted
on a full-width bench that doubles as a locker for the 12-gallon, portable fuel tank and the battery. The seat has a navy blue Sunbrella-covered pad for added comfort. There’s a locking storage locker forward, and a drop-in seat is available.
The Predator is perfectly capable of towing water-skiers, tubes or wakeboarders and its huge flat floor and high topsides would make it perfect
for fishing. It’s a boat that can help cottagers and contractors have fun, but only after the work and the hauling is done.
