2008 Chaparral 224 Sunesta Xtreme Description
When buying a boat for the entire family, you best gain consensus. Chances are your kids will vote for a radical-looking towboat, while your spouse may opt for comfort and a hull that cuts through the water gracefully. If you happen to enjoy fishing or simply cruising around the lake, then a stable, open platform with a T-Top works well.
Say, didn’t I just describe Chaparral’s new 224 Sunesta Xtreme? Matter of fact, I did.
The Xtreme is a full-figured, multi-purpose sportboat, although from the sides and top it may look like a tournament towboat – in fact, it will perform like one given Chaparral’s onboard ballast system and trim tabs.
Chaparral’s registered “Wide Tech” design was the first stand-out feature to catch my eye. The hull’s pickle-fork integrated bow is engineered to optimize total cockpit area.
Forward and aft, you can step aboard and debark safely via two, four-step retractable S/S ladders. For safety and convenience, there is a removable centre cushion on a step leading to the forward deck, which also incorporates an anchor locker.
Moving back into the cockpit, your walk is uninterrupted. There is no centre folding windshield panel, which can work for (or perhaps against) you when the weather turns chilly. I do, however, like the black windshield frame and the secure way it fits.
Built into the inner-liner are two separate consoles. On the passenger’s side, a wide and solid door opens to reveal a sizable head, including a port window that opens. That’s something you won’t find on many direct-drive towboats.
The operator’s console also has a door that swings wide to allow a table, seat cushions and various other items to be securely stowed. The helm itself is large, with instruments and switches prominently placed – including a Perfect Pass digital electronic display.
Heavy-duty expanded vinyl was selected to cover Chaparral’s supportive Dura-Flex bucket seats with flip-up cushions. Behind the operators seat is a small yet functional galley and a table that can be mounted during quiet times.
Further highlights include the 224’s tasteful graphic options, an aft-facing seat pad and rubberized transom mat, and four major speakers mounted to the high, collapsible tower.
As for performance, the 224 is targeted at boaters searching for middle ground – or should I say water! Powered by MerCruiser’s 5.OL MPI, this 4300-pound boat crossover-style Vbottom with pad keel can turn tight at full
speed and hold its own in rough water. This isn’t a flat-bottom, but watersports enthusiasts will enjoy the Xtreme’s overall functionality and
wake building capabilities. If you wish to go faster than 41 mph, a 5.7L engine should do the trick.
