2008 Wellcraft Scarab 35 Sport Description
Boomers with a penchant for performance will clearly remember Scarab’s hey-day, when founder Larry Smith introduced a virtually unbeatable
combination of speed and rough water handling to offshore enthusiasts throughout the world.
Scarabs raced, won championships and became a household name when the TV series Miami Vice aired in the 1980s. Times changed, however, and by the turn-of-the-century, the Scarab brand was dropped from Wellcraft’s
    sportboat business.
Well, what goes around comes around, and the esteemed Scarab name is back.
To be expected, Scarab’s 35 Sport is much more than a fishing boat. Centre consoles are captivating boaters looking for performance, open cockpit space and ease of maintenance; the 35 offers all this and more.
I conducted our test on Lake Huron, assisted by a friend, Mike Zavitz, who had never driven a boat this long or powerful. After gathering my data, experimenting with trim settings and cranking this straightforward, 23-degree Vbottom though an assortment of turns, I said, “Take the wheel and put the throttles down.”
Keep in mind there was not one but three throttles to open up – each unleashing 300 hp. Initially cautious, Mike soon found his comfort zone, weaving back and forth around a wideopen lake and heading toward any chop he could find. Not once did the boat bobble or slide around. At a dry weight of 8,800 lbs without engines, the 35 isn’t light, but it does rise out of the water and ride clean at its top speed – almost 60 mph.
Fact is, the 35 steers easy and tracks straight. Cruising at 42 mph, it will accelerate from 20 mph to 40 mph in a scant five seconds and from 20 to 50 in 8.5. Hitting the 50 mark in 10 seconds from a dead stop was impressive,
    but not surprising.
Given the 35 Sport comes with a tastefully decorated cabin, dinette table, durable and comfortable lean post seating, head and amenities throughout, one tends to forget that the interior is designed for serious anglers.
We found an 84-quart baitwell with light aft, a 60-quart cooler integrated under the forward console seat, and a fish box/insulated storage box with overboard drain port and starboard.
The rear bench seat drops down to increase your fishing space. At the transom lie a rigging station, raw-water wash-down, sink and removable
bins. In the bow, we discovered two builtin tackle storage drawers and trays. Naturally, there are rod racks, holders and rocket launchers galore – some sharing accommodation on the canvas T-Top strung to its white powder-coated arch with spreader lights.
Wellcraft has a winner here. Scarabs have always been special, and I’m happy they’re back.
