2008 Marquis 40 SC Description
Every once in a while, a boat comes along that takes a great leap forward in technology or design or flat-out style. But to have one that leads in three areas at once is quite remarkable. The new Marquis 40SC, powered by Volvo Penta’s ground-breaking IPS 600 diesel drives, is eye-catching as well as remarkable.
I’m not sure what the SC stands for, but it could be either “sport cruiser” or “sedan creative.” Technically, the boat is a sedan, with a single inside helm station located in the singlelevel salon. But it’s no traditional sedan. For starters, the helm is fairly high and placed well forward in the boat, with great visibility aided by wraparound windows and an all-glass door aft.
A tinted, opening sun- and moon-roof in the salon is also distinctive and eliminates any argument for a flybridge. Then there is the curvy shape of the hull, deck and cabin. Viewed from a high vantage point on the stern quarter, the 40SC has thoroughly modern, angular lines. The sheerline bumps up aft of amidships to mirror the line of a sweeping roofline, then sweeps down to meet the teak-topped swim deck and transom, which both have fin-like projections.
The boat’s foredeck is easily accessed by sidedecks, but its charms are really unleashed once you get through the transom door.
If the 40SC has a theme, it’s “better boating through automation.” In the cockpit, the aft bench settee and transom move aft electrically, adding about a foot-and-a-half of cockpit space. The table at the salon settee also moves up and down electrically. Aft to port, the flat-screen TV rises from a cabinet or can be hidden at the touch of a button.
The glass doors to the cockpit fold open completely to create a huge single-level space. The boat’s galley, head and master and guest staterooms are practical, but incorporate modern design elements.
The overall design is ultra-modern, down to the Italian bathroom fixtures, glass and blackquartz finishes, angular furniture, dark wood flooring and the optional striped Zebrana wood veneer cabinetry.
Twin 435-hp Volvo Penta IPS 600 drives with inboard drive pods are tied through computerized controls to a choice of twin levers or a joystick system. The IPS joystick controls the individually articulated forward-facing drives,
each with twin counter-rotating props. IPS allows for almost effortless close-quarters handling.
On the water, the IPS 600s provide top speeds of 41.4 mph at 3650 rpm. At 3000 rpm, the diesels push the boat along at 31.7 and burn a relatively reasonable 12.5 gallons per hour. With the Marquis 40SC, you’ll be running at the front of the fast crowd, but you still want decent mileage.
