2008 Silverton 45 Convertible Description
Convertibles are designed and built to head far offshore in search of trophysized billfish. However, in all likelihood, the only fish hauled aboard most Silverton 45 Convertibles will be pre-packaged, go directly into the fridge and appear later on the dinner table.
At the same time, the attributes that make the Silverton 45 a good fishing boat also make it a comfortable bluewater-capable cruiser; ideal for Canadians who want to cruise big waters in comfort.
The cockpit on the test boat has a large baitwell built into its transom and there’s plenty of room to mount a fighting chair. However, the fibreglass locker unit to the port of the salon doors has a fridge and barbecue instead of a baitprep station.
The 45 has a spacious single-level salon and galley, two heads and three staterooms. The salon is bright, with all-round views from the wraparound windows and cockpit door. Ultraleather sofas and dinette, cherry veneers and laminates, Corian countertops, a 21-inch flat-screen TV and three-zone air conditioning are standard. The test boat adds a full electronics package, flybridge air conditioning, swim platform, central vacuum, washer/dryer, TV/DVDs for each stateroom and the biggest power package available.
Moulded-in fibreglass steps with handholds lead the wide side decks and up to the flybridge. The Maxwell electric windlass is designed for self-launching to limit trips to the foredeck. The test boat adds all-chain rode for security at anchor.
On the water, the turbocharged diesels push the 42,048-pound boat to 20 mph in about 10 seconds and 30 mph in less than 15 seconds. It takes about seven seconds for the turbochargers to spool up. Top speed is 30 mph at 2370 rpm, and the boat cruises comfortably at a remarkable 29 mph at 1900 rpm. The diesels are quiet and smoke-free.
Underway, the flybridge will be the navigational and social centre of the boat. The helm station is aft and amidships, providing full visibility all around. The electronics are mounted on a lifting panel that can drop down out of the
way. Twin drive-by-wire single-lever controls and a bow thruster provide manoeuvrability. The boat responds well to the helm and engines. That said, it’s a big boat that needs an experienced and/or well-trained skipper.
Silverton provides all this live-aboard luxury, offshore capability and sheer muscle at a very reasonable base boat price of $776,368. A wellequipped
45 Convertible will make short work of close to a million bucks, so value is relative.
Out on the water, the Silverton offers no compromises. Whether sportfishing or cruising, the 45 Convertible will be among the leaders.
