2008 Campion Explorer 602 CC Description
Over the last several years, Campion Marine’s reputation has continued to grow around the world with dealers spanning across North America, to Europe and nowAustralia.Certainly adding to Campion’s success is the Explorer line, a series of boats the company brands as “sport utilities.”
The Explorer 602CC fits nicely into the line’s offering of outboard and sterndrive powered sedans, sport cabins, walkarounds and centre consoles. With a maximum length of 22 feet 6 inches and a beam of 7 feet 8 inches, the 602CC is the Campion’s largest centre console.
While the marketplace has many centre consoles to choose from, there are a host of amenities and quality design and construction features that stand out on this Campion, starting with the hull design and lay up.
The Apex hull’s design expands the high pressure zones on the hull, delivering a quicker hole shot and an improved, more stable ride. The fibreglass lay up incorporates three-dimensional fibreglass mat and adds Kevlar along the keel for strength. This combination, along with the fibreglass stringer system and composite cored transom, delivers a strong yet light hull. The final proof of the quality of the boat’s construction is the flawless gel coat in every moulded component from the hull to the cockpit liner.
At rest or underway, the 602CC is an attractive boat especially with the optional stainless steelT-Top. Stepping aboard from a high dock, the wide gunwales provide sure footing with the same aggressive anti-skid pattern as the cockpit liner. The gunwales also incorporate reenforced downrigger mounting surfaces.
At the transom, the 602 has a solid stainless grab rail around the motor well and a hatch to access the bilge and systems. On top of the transom to starboard is a bait tank with optional aeration. The large motor well, designed to accommodate a kicker motor to port of the motor, is flanked by two removable jump seats that store conveniently in the gunwales.
Adding to the 602’s fishability are the two insole fish lockers in the deck, lockable rod holders and gear storage in the gunwales and a moulded toe rail for security when working a line over the side.Additional rods can also be mounted in the four rocket launchers on theT-top. The cockpit is self-draining and the optional wash down system will keep things clean whether fishing or tracking in sand from the beach.
If swimming and family watersports are more your style, an optional ski pylon and standard swim platform with a stainless swim ladder provide good access for getting skiers or wakeboarders aboard.
Any boater will be immediately drawn to the impressive helm. While the boat does not carry an exceptionally wide beam, which makes it ideal for trailering, the centre console is large enough for two adjustable helm seats to be placed side by side without feeling too crowded. The pedestals are mounted on a fibreglass platform that incorporates additional storage. A moulded-in foot rest adds to the comfort at the helm and the high windscreen provides protection even while standing.
The stainless steel, rubber-padded, tilting ShurGrip wheel, coupled with the SeaStar hydraulic steering and wellplaced binnacle, provide comfortable positive control of theYamaha outboard.
The instruments are placed slightly right of centre with the speedometer and tachometer mounted vertically in the high binnacle, flanked by the engine and fuel gauges. Immediately below the gauges, the switches for all systems fall readily to view and hand. Like all Campions, the instruments,Yamaha system matched Faria gauges and wiring are excellent by any builders’ standards. Our tester also came with a standard compass and an optional Lowrance fish finder with GPS and a Clarion weatherproof AM/FM/CD Sirius satellite receiver with input for MP3.
The moderately sized console features reasonable access with a bi-fold lockable door. The space will be best suited to storing gear, a cooler or two, or you can opt for a porta-potty. An open port provides light and ventilation.
Access past the console is generous and will be beneficial when working a fish around the boat. A tall, welded stainless bow rail adds security while standing or for passengers seated in the bow. Forward, there are two storage lockers to port and starboard, moulded into the one-piece cockpit liner and a large wellscuppered locker in the deck.
Removing the optional bow cushion reveals a large storage locker in the bow casting platform.A nice touch here are the two gas struts to support the hatch. On the bow is a solid stainless anchor roller and anchor locker, not always found on a boat of this size.
Maximum power for the 602 is 225 hp and our test boat was equipped with a Yamaha F200.This four-stroke 3,352cc (204.6 CID)V6 was very well matched to the boat. Incorporating precisiontuned, long tube intake tracks, a 24-valve DOHC and Yamaha’s exclusive fuel injection system, the quiet 200 had plenty of low end torque that accelerated the 602 to 20 mph in 5.5 seconds, 30 mph in 8.4 seconds and 40 mph in 11.3 seconds. Equally impressive was the GPS-measured top speed of 49.6 mph at 6000 rpm.
At 4500 rpm, the 602 cruised smoothly and efficiently at a steady 33 mph. Sound levels at the helm averaged 94 dbA – quite reasonable, and mostly due to wind noise.
The handling of the Campion 602CC was what I had expected.Having tested several Campions over the past years, I’m always impressed with the Apex hull’s ability to smooth things out. The 19- degree deadrise smoothed out the chop and helped land the boat smoothly when jumping its own wake. The reverse chines provide for a stable ride, even at top speed with a light load. Properly trimming the Yamaha outboard in, the 602 carves turns smartly, much sharper than one would experience in day-to-day boating.
