2008 Doral Venezia Description
Sometimes when you set off to make something better, you end up with something that’s fantastic completely in its own right. That’s exactly what happened with the all-new-for-2008 Doral Venezia, an agile sport cruiser with the sleek beauty for which the company has made a name for itself.
On the smaller end of Doral’s lineup of express cruisers, the Venezia was originally intended to replace the company’s Monticello. However, both are now part of the 2008 offering of Doral boats.
With the increasing demands of a time crunch world and the stresses that come along with it, there’s perhaps really no surprise there’s a growing demand for cruisers that can whisk people away for a comfortable weekend aboard. These vessels need to fit both a baby-boomer, empty-nester couple’s lifestyle and also make a great family boat. The Doral Venezia easily fits both.
Right away, this 26 foot, 5 inch express cruiser announces itself as a spacious boat for its size – making the absolute most of what it has to offer. From the dock, you step onto the Venezia’s extended integrated swim platform. This will be a popular spot for watersports enthusiasts, with hidden telescopic stainless steel swim ladder creating easy access for skiers and swimmers. There is also a grab rail for added security and a remote control for the radio, as well as hot and cold freshwater shower.
From the swim platform, you enter the spacious cockpit through the port side transom door. Boasting a beam measuring 9 feet, 4 inches, the cockpit area is great for entertaining, lounging and general cruising. Our test boat came with teak-looking non-skid flooring, which was all one level and self-bailing.
An expansive J-shaped lounge to starboard ensures you have lots of room for friends and family to spend a day aboard. The removable cockpit table is relatively small, but functional for the space. To port there is a small refreshment area with granite-look countertops, wet bar, and beverage and bottle holders. Just forward of this, a rear-facing lounge seat provides a spot to stretch out and enjoy the ride. With the factory option hard top and the optional waterproof Bimini on the test boat, this large cockpit space would be a wonderful place to escape for a breather from the harsh sun on hot summer days.
One small portion of the cockpit lounge bench seat shares a back rest with the double-wide helm seat – moving both ways for maximum flexibility of use.The companion helm also sports a bolster for good visibility through the wraparound, walkthrough windshield. At the helm, gauges are positioned high, with lots of room to mount additional instruments. Controls are easy-to-read and also within easy reach.
The moulded-in steps for the walkthrough to the bow are a little precarious as they are small and there is no handrail. Be sure to keep the hatch to the cabin closed if traffic is moving forward onboard – especially while underway. The bow will be the perfect spot for sun worshippers on those hazy, lazy summer days. Simply add a couple of the optional front deck sunpad cushions – which come with integrated pillow – and hold onto the handrails if the ride gets a little bumpy.
Below decks there is a standard cabin for a cruiser of this size, including a head to port that includes all the basic amenities you’d expect to find. To port is the galley, which will be a hub of activity given the entertaining you’ll definitely be doing on board this vessel.Although compact, the galley is stylish with granite-look countertops, stainless steel sink and a glossy cherrywood-look finish on the cabinetry. For the cook on-board, there is a Corian-plate single-burner electric stove, built-in refrigerator, and microwave oven. The galley also has hot and cold pressurized water.
Forward, the large circular dinette converts to a berth, with privacy screen. This is spacious enough to fit all your guests for a late-night poker game or a rainy games day. As well, it’s a comfortable private space for sleeping two. Under the cockpit is an aft berth, with a porthole and small cupboard, this space can easily sleep a couple of kids or an extra adult.
For all those long days spent onboard, the storage is plentiful, so you won’t have to interrupt your time to head back to resupply. Items can be tucked well out of the way in just about every inch of this vessel, with storage under the helm seat, under cockpit seating and all over the cabin.
The Doral Venezia is offered in both single and twin engine configurations, with an option to add a generator. Our test boat was equipped with a singleVolvo 5.7-litre sterndrive, with 320 horsepower. Times in our sea trials were a little slower than expected. For instance, the boat took just over 11 seconds out of the hole to 20 mph. However, based on three people on board and the size of the boat in relation to the single engine, the performance was quite good.
The Venezia cruised smoothly and easily throughout the range – hitting 18.5 mph at 3000 rpm, 27 mph at 3500 rpm and 33.1 at 4000 rpm. The boat topped out at 42.4 mph and 4900 rpm. The Venezia handled confidently and responded well. Tracking was impressive throughout various turning manoeuvres. And it will definitely be a comfortable ride with decibel readings at the helm and aft cockpit at minimal levels both at cruising and top speed.
Using only the best materials, with a smart layout that maximizes space and elegant lines that show pride of workmanship, the Doral Venezia will be a popular edition to the company’s lineup – no doubt about it.
