2008 Lund Tyee 186 GL Description
In 1948, Howard Lund built his first aluminum duck boat and founded a company that has been producing a wide range of aluminum fishing boats for 60 years. Now part of Brunswick Corporation, the company is branching out and preparing to enter the fibreglass boat market with four new models, one being the 186 Tyee GL.
The Tyee 186 GL may be all new and fibreglass, but it shares quite a bit of DNA with its aluminum predecessors, starting with a Lund IPS 2 or Integrated Power Strake hull. The design incorporates wide reverse chines, big longitudinal strakes, a pronounced keel and a broad flat transom. This is a proven design that promises faster hole shots, higher speeds, and improved handling and control over other designs.
With a length of 18 feet, 6 inches and a generous beam of 98 inches, the Tyee 186 has plenty of room in the cockpit for fishing or a day on the water with the family.
The bow area features a large ProDeck casting platform, a locking dry locker, deep fibreglass-lined bow locker, lined draining cooler/locker, and a combination livewell/baitwell. A section of the deck also folds up to expand the casting platform when the swivel pedestal seat is in place. When not fishing, the bow converts to a sport configuration with the optional base cushions and back rests. The bow has also been designed to handle an optional trolling motor, and features a pre-wired plug-in for the motor, a 12-volt outlet and courtesy light.
Designated as a sport and fish, the 186’s transom has a recessed telescopic swim ladder and an aft casting deck that converts to additional seating with a quick flip of two deck sections. The boat incorporates a second a larger livewell with a removable bait bucket at the transom as well.
In the cockpit, there are multiple flush mounts for the swivel pedestal seats, including two positions on the aft casting deck. The cockpit sole itself is easy to clean, non-skid fibreglass with lockable storage for 11 rods found in the deck along with a dedicated locker for two trolling motor batteries.
Moulded side panels in the 27-inch deep cockpit provide even more convenient storage for gear and accessories, like rod and cup holders for the Sport Track System. The 186 Tyee sports dual auto style consoles, with matching Pro Ride seats and moulded anti-skid footrest for a secure ride in the rough stuff. The stylish helm features a tilting sports wheel, Mercury SmartCraft gauges, Lowrance locator and Sony AM/FM CD Stereo. The tall walkthrough windshield should provide plenty of protection on those cool and wet days.
The base power for the Tyee 186 is 115 hp, so the kick of the supercharged 175 hp Verado had us up and running in three seconds. Top speed passes at 6500 rpm, registered in at 51 mph on GPS in two-way testing. At 4000 rpm, the cruise speed settled in at 24 mph and a very quiet 90 dbA at the helm.
High speed turns were no problem for the IPS 2 hull. With the hull design feeding solid water to the Mercury Laser II 19-inch prop, the power stayed hooked up and the boat carved cleanly though the turns. The Lund IPS hull has been designed for improved back trolling and handles this quite well. As the water was calm and flat on test, we were not able to test the hull in every condition, but just the same, the ride and handling of the 186GL was first rate.
Overall, I think Lund has hit the mark with this new entry into the fibreglass boat segment.
