For some boaters, a top serves simply to protect the cockpit from rain while it sits idly at the dock or on a trailer. And rough-water performance isnt really required.
On the other hand, water-access cottagers, divers and anglers whose boats are more for transportation than relaxation have different priorities. They need a soft-riding hull, seating that will be comfortable in all wave conditions and protection from the elements. They need to check out the CustomWeld 265 GLE Cruiser.
Built of welded aluminum, it has a voluminous cockpit and a full-headroom hardtop cabin with sliding glass side windows and a walk-through welded aluminum-frame windscreen. The boats beam is carried well forward, creating a short bow compartment with a small drained footwell and anchor and rode locker forward, and a more spacious cabin and cockpit.
In the cabin, the bulkheads and ceiling are lined with marine carpet and floors covered with easyclean marine vinyl.
At the helm and companion positions, there areMariner spring-mounted swivelling seats with adjustable leg height, lumbar support and armrests. The boats 18-degree modified-V hull handles waves comfortably, but the seats absorb any residual pounding. Rear seats consist of two well-padded benches along each side, with room for up to three passengers each. They have storage lockers below and, with a cushion insert, can be converted to a double bed.
With excellent fit-and-finish, the boat is still rugged. It has checkerplate on the side decks and bracket (that doubles as a swim platform), plenty of welded handrails in the cockpit and along the rooftop, and a tall removable towing bit aft (that could tow a wakeboarder or a small barge).
The CustomWeld 265GLE Cruiser is speedy as well, reaching 40 mph in just over nine seconds, with a top speed of 50.7 mph at 6000 rpm. Easily on plane at 3000 rpm, the boat cruises at 30 mph at 3500 rpm and 40 mph at 4600 rpm. Responsive at all speeds, the boat carves through turns and reacts quickly in close quarters. Sturdy construction and a well-lined cabin make for a quiet ride.
Plenty of boats can handle a fair-weather day on the water, but for those who want to be comfortable any time of the year the CustomWeld provides a tough yet well-finished solution.
