The team atMonterey has certainly lived up to their reputation for hands on design with the 234FS, as almost everything simply fits and is thoughtfully placed.
Powered by a MerCruiser 350MAG coupled to a Bravo Three drive, our test boat came out of the hole to 20 mph in a mere 4.56 seconds. Although larger engines are available options, this power package pushed the 234FS to a top speed of 52 mph on GPS with MerCruisers latest drives shifting very smoothly.
At the stern, the integrated swim platform is quite roomy and the side boarding ladder allows for easy access to the water without making contact with the drive. The walk-through transom provides convenient access to the boat then all but disappears with filler cushions creating additional seating on the rear U-shaped bench. The optional table is a nice touch with mounts on the front of the rear bench so you wont stub your toe. This also allows the snap-in carpet to rest nice and flat on the floor.
The matching captains chairs with flip-up bolsters are very comfortable and leave plenty of legroom to spare. The fully finished head compartment maximizes available headroom and is easily accessible through a large door in front of the passenger area. The well-organized and clutter-free helm is protected by a full wraparound windshield, which provides great visibility with no distortion of the water ahead.
Modern creature comforts like the 12-volt andMP3 accessory plug are conveniently located near the captains cup holder, with an additional 12-volt receptacle on the rear bench. A cavernous storage compartment located under the helm features an access door that, when open and latched, doubles as a walk-through door to block the wind. The bow area offers adequate space and storage. While the seat cushions could be a little softer and less square, they certainly feel like they would stand the test of time.
The cliché even keel probably best describes theMonterey 234 FS as the ride was very stable and efficient on the water unlike some boats that rely heavily on power trim to free the hull from the water. Over the waves the boat was solid as a rock and the deep gunwales inside gave an immediate sense of security in this great family bowrider.
