2009 Stanley 21 Islander Description
Refined is not a word often used to describe Stanley Boats. Rugged, tough, muscular and ready-for-anything would be more likely descriptions. But “refined” in the physical sense, something purified or reduced to an essential state, is appropriate. By that definition, Stanley’s new Islander 21 is a very refined ride.

The big welded-aluminum bowrider is also a refinement of many of the production, semi-custom and custom aluminum boats Stanley has built over the years, from small utilities to trawler-style cruisers.

The company builds outboard-powered versions of the 21-footer, but decided to try a sterndrive version as well.

For their part, sterndrives are less expensive and easier to service in the water than outboards. The MerCruiser 4.3MPI V6 that powers the test boat, for example, is a well-proven powerplant with the added fuel efficiency and ease of operation of multipoint fuel injection.

Paired with the 21’s modified-V hull with broad reverse chines that planes easily, theMerCruiser tops out at close to 50 mph and cruises comfortably at speeds between 20 and 40 mph. With a 19-inch prop, the test boat hits the engine’s rev limiter at top speed, but a 21-inch prop will easily fix that and only improve the boat’s performance.

Layout-wise, the Islander 21 is a big, beamy bowrider with spacious bow and main cockpits and plenty of storage space. It handles wind and waves with ease, and performance and ride quality will likely only improve with a full load of people and gear aboard.

The boat adds a couple of new twists, with back-to-back “sleeper-style” seats at the helm and companion positions and a jump seat, sun lounge and swim platform combination aft. The boat’s 8-foot, 4-inch beam leaves enough room for a double-wide companion seat, which folds down into a double sun lounge. Aft, there’s room for two jump seats (with storage below), a small sun lounge atop the engine compartment and a wide semi-circular swim platform aft extending over the drive.

The test boat’s unfinished aluminum, welded windshield frame and checker-plate floors give it a rugged appearance, but burgundy Sunbrella upholstery and top add a touch of colour. It’s the kind of refinement that fits in well in cottage country.
