When you combine generations of fishermen and maritime adventure with a legendary naval architect, you know the end result will be a timeless boat without peers. That is what Medeiros Boat Works has done with its Limestone 26.
Designed by Canadian naval architect Mark Ellis, the 26 combines form with function as it remains tough in rough water and elegant during sunset cruises. The most distinctive Ellis attribute in the 26 and other Limestones is the centrally placed engine. This places the weight at the centre of the boat, which helps to provide greater stability especially in rough water.
Under the engine hatch of our test boat was a beefy MerCruiser 496 MAG connected to a Bravo X outdrive. The high winds and heavy rollers on Lake Ontario provided an excellent test facility on test day. Despite some rough conditions, the 26 rode solid and secure. And even as the waves pounded on the hand-laid fibreglass hull, there was little to no flex. At a comfortable cruise of 30 miles per hour and 3000 rpm, the ride was dry and safe. Even when we pushed the throttles to top out at 50 miles per hour and 4500 rpm, I never once second guessed the hull.
The interior of the Limestone 26 can simply be described as understated elegance, as the all-white interior made great use of space. The spacious aft seat, large in-floor storage lockers and built-in battery charger provide functionality while the stainless steel hardware and teak trim add a regal finish. The cuddy comes complete with a six-foot berth and flushing head.
All Limestone boats are built to customer order. That means you know your vessel is a one-of-a-kind, and comes infused with a knowledge and skill reminiscent of the stable vessels of the Portuguese explorers of old.
Im not suggesting travelling around the world in your Limestone 26 although, I certainly think it would be up for the challenge.
