2004 Regal Regal Commodore 4260 Express Cruiser Description
Probably the toughest thing about writing this test is not to be so impressed with the interior finish and fittings that we forget about the boat's absolutely fabulous engines.

Regal's 4260 Express Cruiser is the flagship of their line and that represents the state-of-the-art in today's express cruisers. Including the massive swim platform, the Regal measures 44' 7" on a 14' beam. It's about 22,000 lbs and its twin Volvo turbo diesels send her across the bay at almost 40 mph.

You'll get onboard at the swim platform so let's start there. This is a choice piece of waterfront property. It's huge with a stainless steel boarding ladder, secondary platform step or seat and with transom doors port and starboard. Storage in the transom includes electric shorepower line retractors. The aft deck is for entertaining with bench seat, port side bench, a gas grill, sink, counter and U-line refrigerator.

We love this. Food preparation can take place outside where you want to be and cooking odours won't linger in the interior. The test boat had the optional hardtop. We think it's handsome and functional but some owners may prefer to leave the boat more open. The bridge has a large U-shaped convertible dinette to port. Opposite is the helm with an electrically adjustable seat and flip-up bolster.

The helm strikes a balance between yacht design and sport boat styling with tilt steering, high-mounted array of instruments, compass and a row of RayMarine electronics. Our test boat had the optional Nobeltec 4.5 open array radar and nav system. The windshield frame is particularly handsome and highly polished with curved glass and a swing-open centre section for access to the forward deck.

A massive hatch slides under the helm, revealing the companionway down three floating stairs to the salon. The plush convertible dinette area has lots of storage space plus overhead lockers, portholes and particularly glossy varnished wood cabinetry.

To starboard is the galley with Corian counters, large sink, plenty of lockers. On our extensively optioned test boat, matching dishes and cutlery are all beautifully organized for convenient cruising.

The master's quarters, with a generous hanging locker, are forward. There is a flat screen TV-DVD and a enerously sized private head - is what's expected in the boat this size.

What isn't expected is that the aft cabin also has a private head, both with vacuum-flush heads, showers and all the comforts of home. Thick, solid wood sliding doors divide the cabin areas for privacy. The aft cabin features twin berths rather than one queen. It's easy to get carried away with the interior features and ignore the wonderful twin Volvo TAMD 75P EDC engines. These in-line sixes are only 444 cid but with turbochargers and aftercoolers produce 480 hp at the crankshaft. Smooth and smoke-free throughout our test, the engines always had a big torquey feel.

From a standing start, it takes the Volvos a while to spool up their turbochargers but when they do, big things happen. From idle at 700 rpm and 6.5 mph in gear, we were planed off in 17 seconds and in 25 seconds, reached 38.9 mph. That's very impressive for 22,000 pounds. Cruising at 2,200 rpm, the Regal was making a marvelously smooth and quiet 30.4 mph. We found the hydraulic steering very responsive.

Big boats, however, spend a lot of time at low speeds. The Regal tracked at idle in gear without helm correction and when it came time to dock it, the bow thrusters made the task easy. By now you may have glanced at the spec sheet and discovered that this boat is $689,000, as tested, with every imaginable convenience, and a level of performance that could embarrass a lot of so-called sport boats. We think the Regal will return equal amounts of enjoyment and satisfaction to any lucky owner.
