Crestliner Boats, a Genmar subsidiary, is a name associated with fine aluminum workmanship. This Minnesota-based company has come a long way in 58 years, now offering welded-aluminum boats for multiple applications. From car-toppers to deck boats and everything in-between, the Crestliner logo is known far and wide.
The Super Hawk 1800 is the most popular boat in Crestliner's fleet, and one of four, versatile Super Hawk models measuring from 16 to 20 feet long. Measuring 18'2", the boat is 95" wide, weighs 1,470 lbs., and is rated for a maximum of 175 hp.With Yamaha's all-newfor- 2004 F150 four-stroke clamped to its stern, the boat has punch at lower end, lays down a top speed of 48 mph, and when rigged with an electric trolling motor, can troll quietly near shore.
Boaters in the market for a solid, smooth-riding hull that doubles as a fishing machine or a ski-boat should be impressed. The Super Hawk 1800 features Pro-Form II fishing chairs with multiple bases, an elevated helm with custom panels, a huge walk-through sport windshield and generous storage areas. Anglers will like the stern casting deck complete with storage, pedestal bases and an aerated, 22 gal. livewell. Toe-holds are an added measure of security, located port and starboard,immediately below a lockable rod compartment.
Crestliner claims superior structural integrity.While Lund and other competitors will argue on the side of rivets, Crestliner pioneered the Uniweld hull with interlocking stringers. All seams are rivet-free; instead they're welded using a tongue-in-channel technique. Together with its one piece/bow-to-stern stringer system, Crestliner has enough faith to offer a warranty that covers hull welds for the life of the original owner.
Having driven many aluminum boats through the years, I know that certain hulls run more "free" than others.At high speeds, the Super Hawk is one of those. Trimming the boat is critical to control, and balance is important. At 40 mph, with the trim set at neutral, the Super Hawk rides quite gracefully. It has a welldesigned, reverse chine deep V hull that makes it fast off the mark. From a dead stop, the hull accelerates to 30 mph in 5.1 seconds. From 30 to 45 mph takes another five seconds, a good indication of strong mid-range speed.The boat cruises comfortably at 35 mph, or 4,000 rpm, and is relatively quiet (83 to 88 dB) throughout the cockpit at these speeds.
Test day was choppy, but we were able to find enough calm water to throw the Super Hawk into some tight turns. Trimmed at zero degrees, I could rush up to a corner, momentarily back off the throttle, tap the trim down, and then turn. In rough water however, I negotiated turns at much slower speeds. Following our test, Crestliner modified the Super Hawk's bottom for added stability at high speed.
Crestliner's standard features include bow storage, an amber cockpit courtesy light, heavy duty "Dock-Guard" gunnel bumper, safety grab handles and a fire extinguisher. Optional on our test boat was an Aquatronics cassette/stereo, but no CD player. While a bow electronics system was wired to go, bow trim for the engine was working. Custom tops and covers are available to match the boat's durable Armor-Guard baked-on paint finish.
