2004 Triumph Triumph 191 DC Description
Much has been made of Triumph's tough exterior and its positive-flotation interior. Built of Roplene - a tough kind of polyethylene that takes a beating and comes back for more - the boats are sturdy. Foam-filled for full flotation, the boats are safe enough for the whole family. Not much has been made, however, of how good Triumph boats look.

Maybe that's because until recently, the boats' fit and finish too often said, "I'm different."Triumphs still don't take a shine like fibreglass, but they look great; the company's manufacturing process has come a long way. Joints always align and routed King-board decks and hatches look great. Previously only available in a dappled off-grey colour, these craft now come in a choice of hues. Triumph actually builds some attractive bright yellow boats, but those boats and that colour are reserved for towing operator Sea-Tow.

As for the new 191, it's really four boats in one: a fish and ski (with a rear seat that converts to a casting deck), a walk-through (with tall windscreen), a side console (for maximum fishing space) and dual-console.

My 191 DC test boat, a dual-console fishing and fun boat powered by a fourstroke Honda 130 outboard, was tancoloured, with white hatches and decktrim forward and tan hatches and trim aft.

Fishermen who buy this boat for whatever species they pursue, will not be disappointed. Livewells fore and aft feature raw water pumps on timers. When under way, the pumps go to recirculating mode. The aft 35-gallon livewell has an easily removable bait bucket on the port side. To starboard, under another door in the deck, there's a trash bucket. To reach the fuel reserve valve - which engages the five or sixgallon reserve in the 75-gallon built-in fuel tank - just remove the trash bucket.

A floor level aft locker has sliding mounting brackets for two trolling motor batteries.

Forward, there's a 33-gallon livewell and two dry storage compartments below deck. A couple of netted plastic inserts in the coamings hold small items in place. Wiring exists for a bowmounted fishfinder and trolling motor, along with a trim switch, battery switch, trolling motor plug and receptacle.

In the cockpit coamings, plastic inserts provide three-place rod lockers port and starboard. For salmon, walleye and muskie fishermen, an engine well on the port side of the transom stands ready for a smaller kicker motor for trolling. Deepwater fishermen will appreciate the wide gunnels, ready for downrigger installation. On the consoles, screwed down plexiglass windscreens allow for easy removal and replacement.

The 191 DC sports four swiveling fishing chairs, done in attractive two-tone upholstery including tasteful inset Triumph logos. Faria gauges, brushedmetal dashboard inserts and a tilt steering wheel complete the classy air. At the helm, the Hummingbird Matrix 25 fishing system is all business.

Out on choppy Tampa Bay, on Florida's West Coast, the 191 DC performed handsomely as well. With the four-stroke Honda 130 outboard on the transom, the boat snapped onto plane, reaching 20 mph in 5.8 seconds and 30 mph in 8.9 seconds.

The boat tops out at 37.5 mph at 6,000 rpm and cruises comfortably at 30 mph at 4,500 rpm and 26.5 mph at 4,000 rpm.At 3,000 rpm the boat still holds its plane, at 13.4 mph.

Thanks to the four-stroke Honda and the sound-damping qualities of the Roplene and foam construction, the Triumph is quiet. At idle, it's almost noiseless. At cruising speeds, decibels still register in the low to mid 80s. The Triumph 191 DC is the strong handsome type, and with the Honda aboard, it's the strong silent type as well.
