2004 Misty River Misty River Nomad 1984 Description
Writers procrastinate. What a surprise. When deadline pressures loom, I find myself dedicating time, which I clearly don't have, to superfluous tasks around the house. I become a neat freak, to the point of being obsessive. Mindless tasks are good, as is turning on the TV.Rule No.1? I can't settle on any show, otherwise I'm really wasting time.

Well, it just so happens that I tuned into Canadian Sportfishing on the day reserved to write this test report. Host Italo Labignon was casting from the bow of a forest green Misty-River aluminum fishing boat, catching largemouth bass on crankbaits somewhere in Ontario.Since watching the show suddenly became a research opportunity, Rule No. 1 was waived.

I observed how stable the boat looked at anchor. Just weeks before, I had tested Misty River's Nomad 1984. In my notes, I had scribbled "deep forward cockpit - safe and stable for fishing." As Italo and his fishing partner pulled in some spirited three-pounders, the boat stayed steady.

When it comes to building aluminum boats, Misty River knows their business. The Nomad 1984 features a simple, but effective conventional V-hull/reverse chine design. At 19 feet long, and 84 inches wide, the boat is large enough but light enough to perform exceptionally well when powered by Yamaha's F150 fourstroke outboard.

From a standing start, the Nomad accelerates like a rocket, planing in 1.9 seconds and reaching 30 mph in five seconds. Yamaha's new F150 deserves shares some credit, with bullish bottom-end punch and great mid-range performance. Accelerating from 20 to 40 mph in just 4.13 seconds, and 30 to 45 mph in 4.09 seconds, you can see the consistency. Even the upper acceleration numbers are quick, with the speedometer needle climbing from 30 mph to 50 mph in only 8.18 seconds.

Trimmed positive, Misty-River's Nomad loosens up,and will hit a top speed of 50 mph revving 5,800 rpm.Trim a bit too much in the turns and you can make it hop around. I find the motor has plenty of punch, so you don't need to slam the throttle down coming out of a corner. The hull can take plenty of trim angle when driving in a straight line, but the motor should be tucked slightly entering a turn.

Like the current generation of luxury aluminum boats, the Nomad 1984's ride is soft, even in choppy conditions. Anglers expect this. But fishermen aren't the only ones who will enjoy this model. The 1984 is a true multi-purpose machine, designed for watersports and general day-boating.

I particularly like the seating arrangement. The driver's air-ride pedestal rises or lowers for optimum comfort behind a large, protective walk-through windshield. A side console or back-troller option is available.Aft are two flip-up seats attached to the aft casting platform that fold flat and into the floor.Another pedestal seat can be placed forward for bow fishing.

Safety features include gunnel grabrails, lockable storage compartments, and a deep forward cockpit - great for kids.By choosing the Nomad's pro fishing interior package, Misty River includes an aerated forward livewell, aft aerated baitwell, space for a trolling motor, and a rod locker that extends from the sides, doubling as a step.

Several exterior colours are available, all co-ordinating with the boat's carpet, upholstery and console.Misty River's look is clean and practical, meant for fishing and family activities.

That said, I better stop here. Following Canadian Sportfishing came an episode of Trading Spaces. Rule No.1 applied.
