Approaching the new Sea-Doo Speedster 200 on land - at the Bombardier press conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, where it was introduced - the first thing I noticed was the sweeping curved shape of the hull, which gives the impression of an aerodynamically designed speedboat. At the stern, however, the large sunpad area over the engine compartment tells you that the boat is built for comfort and quiet enjoyment of the waterfront as well.
Out on the water, the boat - powered by twin Rotax 4-TEC four-stroke engines driving water jets - lives up to its visual billing. It's fast and fun but also has the practical storage and equipment that boaters need for a day on the water.
On climbing onto the boat to take a look around, I began to discover all kinds of storage compartments which add up to total storage space of 46 cubic feet, larger than most comparable models. Unique to any boat of this size is the storage compartment in the bow, in front of the seating area, large enough to contain me. At 190 pounds, that's no small matter.
The rear storage area above the engine has a dual-access system that lets you enter by lifting either side of the access hatch under the sunpad or both hatches at once as a single unit.The interior design of the boat consists of two seats in the bow area, swivel bucket seats at the helm and companion positions and a bench seat for three in the aft of the cockpit.The helm and companion positions are protected by windscreens with pop-up wind deflectors.
The storage compartment in front of the passenger bucket seat has a built-in ice chest for those hot days on the water. For the boating family that enjoys water skiing or wakeboarding, the performance and out-of-the-hole pickup of the twin Rotax engines is impressive (0-20 mph in just under three seconds). Adding to the boat's appeal as a towboat are a popup ski pylon and plenty of ski and wakeboard storage.A full tower is optional.
The Speedster 200's Inlet Clearance System electronically controls the pivoting intake grate to clear weeds. Sea-Doo always has great graphics and colours and the Speedster 200 is no different, with a bright red-and-white hull, grey upholstery with red accents and striping on the hull to give it a high-performance look.A similar combination is available in blue. The Speedster 200 offers Bimini top, mooring cover, cockpit carpet and a galvanized custom-matched trailer as options.
Taking the Speedster out for a test run was impressive, to say the least, with a top end speed of 55 mph along with the great acceleration. From standing still, I was at full speed in less than 10 seconds.
The smoothness of the twin Rotax engines is quite noticeable as you power through a number of manoeuvres.When making sharp turns the boat follows your every command as the deep-V hull slices through the water. I tested the boat on a river system in Louisiana that offered no rough water but later I was able to try the boat in some choppy waters in Lake Muskoka. I was pleasantly surprised as the boat effortlessly, landing softer than most other 20-footers.
The Speedster 200 is a definite winner with its ultramodern styling and innovative features, offering a boat with power and performance aplenty.
