2004 Wellcraft Wellcraft V-21 Cuddy Description
When I think of the Wellcraft V-21 Cuddy, I can't help but thinking of the old wedding adage about what brides should carry to the altar. You know the one: "something old, something new…." It seems appropriate since the boat is a marriage of old and new design.

What's old about the Wellcraft V-21 Cuddy is the hull. The former V-20 Step- Lift modified-V hull became a favourite of boaters while part of the Wellcraft line for 26 years before being discontinued in the mid-1990s. The hull is back for the same reason it remained a stalwart for over a quarter-century - it rides softly, tames waves and turns like a charm, offering the performance of a 24- to 26- footer in an affordable 21-foot package.

What's new about the V-21 Cuddy are the cockpit layout, below-decks accommodations and curvy good looks.

First of all, the V-21 is well equipped for fishing. There's storage space for three eight-foot rods port and starboard in inserts in the coamings, with more rod storage space belowdecks. Then there's the 24-gallon baitwell in the port side transom and the two large drained fishboxes in the cockpit floor. The coamings are padded so you'll be comfortable while fighting that big fish.

The V-21 is also a great family boat, built for more than just fishing. While the swiveling helm seat is comfortable and slides back to allow easy standup driving, the double-wide back-to-back companion seat converts to a sunlounge. The 48-quart Igloo cooler with a padded lid serves as extra seating. There's also an optional two-place aft cockpit seat that flips back out of the way when more open space is needed. There are swim platforms on either side of the 200-hp Evinrude outboard and a removable boarding ladder.

With a full-beam cabin, access to the foredeck is provided by good-sized steps that are built into the deck mould just to the left of the helm, leading to a walkthrough windscreen. On the foredeck, no-nonsense diamond-shaped non-skid is moulded-in.

The cabin itself is small, but easily reached through the broad companionway. The V-berth/settee provided me with seating headroom, but only in the seat furthest aft. There's some storage space belowdecks and a chemical head (that would have to be rigged for pumpout in Canada) on rails which slides back out of sight below the cockpit floor. With filler cushions in place, the cabin could be a cozy nest for a couple on a weekend getaway. More likely, it will be used for dry gear storage and shelter from inclement weather.

While the V-21 Cuddy's accommodation may be limited, its forward progress won't be held back by waves or weather. During my test last summer, top speed, with an Evinrude 200 on the transom, was 47.2 mph in GPS speed trials off St. Petersburg, Florida. Nicely on plane at about 20 mph at 3,000 rpm, the boat cruises at 27.5 mph at 3,500 rpm and 34.2 mph at 4,000 rpm. Acceleration is impressive - 0-30 mph arrived in under seven seconds.

The boat really proves itself, however, when the wind blows and the waves come up. My test boat sliced easily through the water when I drove it at high speeds through choppy one-and-a-half foot waves. It carved through ocean swells with ease. A launch over a steep three-foot boat wake ended with a solid, rattle-free landing.

The Cuddy V-21 doesn't just provide the performance of a much larger boat; it rides like a really good 24-foot boat. Proving, I believe, that you can't get enough of a good thing. And that really good boats simply never go out of style.
