2004 Zodiac Zodiac Pro Open 650 Description
With the Zodiac Pro Open, the word "ultimate" seems to pop readily to mind. If you're looking for ultimate stability and safety in a boat, you will undoubtedly consider an inflatable. But when you also require ultimate performance, you want to make it a rigid inflatable.

RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) provide the best of both inflatable and fibreglass boats. Because they have hulls and running surfaces built from moulded fibreglass, they can deliver the deep-V comfort and seakeeping ability that's needed for offshore boating. The rigid portion of the hull also helps to provide first-class interior accommodations, storage and locker space.

The inflatable collar, though, adds flotation and stability both at rest and under way, while keeping the boat's weight down.Add an outboard and you've got an easily towed offshore performer. You will feel safe in almost any weather.

On test day in Port Dover, Ont., I didn't head far offshore, but still got more than my fair share of nasty Lake Erie waves. The skies were clear but a wind was raking the shoreline and whipping the shallow water into steep rollers.

The 21'4" Pro Open 650 test boat, powered by a Suzuki 140 four-stroke outboard, actually ran quite comfortably in the steep chop at 23 mph at 3,500 rpm and 27 mph at 4,000 rpm.Top speed, of course, was another matter entirely.

I finally got the boat to top end, running with the wind and waves and catching plenty of air.All the while, stability and safety were lesser concerns than comfort and the ability to hang onto the steering wheel during the wild ride.

I managed to get the boat up to 45 mph on the GPS,with the engine turning 5,500 rpm. I am quite sure that a calmer day would have seen top speeds closer to 50 mph.

Speed, of course, was not the Pro Open's only charm. Nor was its ability to fly high and land softly. But both attributes were nevertheless appreciated. The boat's broad chines and well-place lifting strakes helped lift it onto plane quickly, reaching 20 mph in under six seconds and 30 mph in just over seven seconds. The 14" X 21" prop worked well.

The Suzuki 140, a four-stroke like all Suzuki outboards, started readily, ran smoothly, had plenty of torque and worked quietly.A great engine, it's easy on fuel and sure to be hard on the competition.

The 650's sturdy hull, had cleanly finished lockers aplenty - in the bow floor, in the aft corners and in the centre console. The leaning post seat at the helm, replete with fishing rod holders, was perfect for driving in the offshore world where the 650 will let you play. A portable cooler can be secured between the two aft lockers, creating a nice seat; alternately, it can be placed beneath the leaning post or forward of the console, out of the way.

There are four more rod holders aft, just forward of the engine well. An optional ski pylon can be mounted along the centreline. Or, if you have that cooler placed aft and want comfortable passenger seating, there's an optional backrest that fits into the rod-holders. Ideal for fishing, the boat would also make a good all-round cottage or dive boat.

The dealer, Ed Laevens of Bridge Yacht Sales, had added a boarding ladder to the test boat, just to port of the outboard, a good and necessary addition. You may also want to add the optional Bimini top. With a boat like this and a sunny day, you may never want to head back to port, so you'll need some protection from the elements.
