2001 Rinker Fiesta Vee 270 Description
Would you spend $4,400 on a radar arch? We would if it was Rinker Boat Company’s arch for the Fiesta Vee 270. Care-fully formed from strong rot-free aluminum instead of weather-vulnerable wood and fibreglass, the arch typ-ifies Rinker’s approach to building boats.
Craftsmanship and refined build quality are found throughout this compact express cruiser.
But there is another reason for mounting that arch on the Fiesta Vee 270. The boat would look a bit stubby without it. In order to provide superior cabin accommodations, Rinker has adopted a unique hull profile for its cruisers, maintaining a very high freeboard from bow to stern. Add the arch to the 270, its proportions even out and the boat takes on a truly sporty air.
Diana describes the Rinker cruisers as “yacht inspired.” Indeed, their
quality, spaciousness and commanding presence do give the impression of a much larger vessel. In a boat less than 30 feet long, a roomy, open cabin with 76 inches (193 cm) of headroom is unique.
The rest of the interior layout is standard pocket cruiser fare. Except for Rinker’s selection of materials and obvious attention to the details, there’s not much else that can be done once you’ve designed in comfortable bow and aft cabin sleeping areas, a properly equipped micro-galley and an adequately-sized head. (The availability of both air conditioning and a generator does set the 270 apart.) It’s a matter of personal taste, but we would have preferred a choice of interior colours. For us, Rinker’s beige and brown earth tones are lost in the ’70s.
Yacht-inspired does de-scribe many of the topside features. The gunnels offer a walkaround route from bow to stern with the radar arch, windshield frame and bow rail offering a handhold. Port-side cockpit seating arcs around the pilot’s swivel bucket, maintaining an interactive social environment while underway. The stern’s wide bench will convert to a sun-lounger. At the bench’s starboard edge there is a gap, a walkway providing access to a door in the tall transom that, in turn, opens out onto the large swim platform.
Whether boat or yacht, any mariner will appreciate some of the Rinker cockpit’s detail features, like the built-in tilt-out trash bin, the snap-out carpet covering the self-bailing ’glass liner and the innovative upholstery mounting system.
Rinker’s elevated freeboard gives away very little seaworthiness. Only when approaching the dock in a stiff breeze does the 270’s helm feel the effect of the tall sides—and the traction of a twin-prop outdrive does much to counteract that. At 18 degrees the hull’s V is moderate, but the ride is soft and the handling stable and predictable. In all conditions the Fiesta Vee 270
feels substantial, larger than it is. For a compact express, that's always a mark of a good boat.
