2004 Regal Regal 2200 Description
Years ago, upon introducing its signature FasTrac hull design, Regal Boats was literally catapulted into a leadership position in the sportboat market. While full-beam, stepped hulls are commonplace now, Regal continues to refine their bottoms, improving on the original design.

The Regal 2200 for 2004 is a good example. Previous models featured a number of steps or breaks in the extended- V hull surface to deliver higher speeds with greater fuel efficiency. The 2200 now boasts just one large, single step - this being the most obvious change in Regal's focus on hydrodynamics. It certainly looks less busy, and following a hard run in some nasty water, I can attest to how well the bottom actually worked.

Powered by Volvo Penta's 225-hp 4.3 GXi, and swinging a 19"-pitch stainlesssteel Mirage propeller, the Regal 2200 planed swiftly and evenly in 4.78 seconds, without significant bow rise. Hitting 30 mph in 7.6 seconds, and 40 mph in 10.9 seconds, the 2200 topped out at 51 mph turning 4,800 rpm.

The motor's low-end and mid-range punch impressed us, pulling from 20 to 30 mph in 4.2 seconds and from 20 to 40 in 8.6 seconds. While we didn't measure fuel efficiency, the boat clearly felt light in the water. The hull stayed on plane at 18.5 mph/2,500 rpm and cruised effortlessly at 36 mph.

The driving experience isn't unique, but it is predictable. After executing several turns port and starboard, I quickly sensed the right speed and trim angle at which to attack the turn, depending on wave size and direction. It was a blustery day for our test, but the boat tracked true, turned on a dime and never skipped sideways. Decelerating from full throttle to neutral, the hull planted itself quickly in the water, again without the bow rising as the boat fell off plane.

By the end of our test, I was entering a turn at almost full speed, backing off momentarily to set the bow, then throttling back down. I felt at one with the boat, which is how I measure good balance from bad.

While performance is key, Regal builds a fine-looking, functional boat. The 2200's cockpit is tastefully appointed with raised lumbar and flip-up thigh bolster seats (you have to love these when docking) constructed from a combination of low- and high-density foam. As well, there is a full compliment of nonfogging, backlit Faria gauges, an angled foot brace integral to the console, grabhandles for all passengers, and multiple built-in beverage holders placed throughout. I particularly liked the competition steering wheel that matched the boat's carbon-fibre helm panels.

The padded transom lounge is cleverly designed with an adjustable backrest. This lifts to allow passengers to step over it onto the swim platform. Here you will find lots of depth - it actually extends completely over the stern drive, and conceals features like a telescopic boarding ladder and hand-held shower.

The 2200 has numerous compartments to stow away gear, including StoreMore lockers behind backrests in the bow. The engine compartment is also quite large and accessible for maintenance. From wiring to fittings, everything under the hatch was neatly routed and fastened.

Regal's lines and graphics make it look sleek and subtle on the water, the overall effect in part due to the company's high-quality mould preparation. Stainless components and hardware are used, mostly through-bolted as part of a six-step bonding process. We especially liked the forward running lights mounted to the hull and the large, protective bow-eye plate. They make it shine, in more ways than one.
