2004 Nautique Team Nautique 226 Description
In case you haven't noticed, wakeboard boats are the latest rage. Distinguished by radical-looking towers holding multiple wakeboards, flood-lights and speakers, they now have a presence in cottage country.

For wakeboard purists, they are essential. For skiers, kneeboarders and tubers, they are hot - but hardly necessary. For parents with older teens whose interest in cottage life is waning, they could be a terrific investment.

Take, for instance, a high-end wakeboard boat such as the Team Nautique 226. Its size and interior layout is similar to that of a typical full-figured cottage bowrider. The obvious differences are found beneath the waterline, bolted to the gunnels and under the engine hatch.

At cruise, the Nautique 226 rides as well as any sterndrive-powered bowrider - actually better than most. Because PCM's Excalibur 330-hp engine is geared for torque, it relinquishes some top-end speed, but hey, 44 mph is hardly slow. A drawback of inboard or V-drive power is low-speed maneuverability, so reversing around the pier can be challenging. With time and practice, docking gets easier.

At full speed, the Nautique can turn on a dime and give change, and the prop will never cavitate. An I/O-powered bowrider's balance and hull design simply won't allow it to turn as tightly, or as safely, as a wakeboard boat at high speed.

So what's my point? Families into watersports won't need two boats when one very cool and luxurious wakeboard boat will do. The only question from the teens will be:"who gets to drive?"

Since Nautique is part of the 80-year old Correct Craft company, and customization is offered, the buyer is able to choose features and a colour scheme to suit his particular taste. There are three performance packages for the 226 - Signature, Limited and Team. Team gives you everything the Limited edition does, plus the Launch Control System with ballast tanks and helm control, a Flight Control Tower with board racks, Perfect Pass Digital Pro,Kicker stereo upgrade, different graphics and a composite boarding platform (teak is available).

There is a long list of standard features and options, including a mammoth sunpad with a walk-through to the transom, remote engine-hatch release button and dual fuel fillers so you don't have to swing the boat around at the gas dock.

An amazing 65-cubic feet of easy-toaccess storage space is available. You won't find that on a family runabout! As for comfort, every seat is firm, modular and supportive. Seats and lounges are upholstered with non-woven vinyl.

The helm is a high-tech haven. To begin with, there's a starter button, instead of a key. The 226's racy steering wheel matches the dash and side panels, and there are gauges for every function, including the three ballast tanks that hold 900 lb of water in rotocast tanks.

An exceptional ride and great performance can be attributed to a combination of hull design features including reverse chines, Correct Craft's trademarked Dispersion Tunnel, Spray Relief Pockets and Performance Strakes.Since the hull is foamfilled, and a sound deadening system is used, we didn't hear any squeaks or rattles.

The Nautique 226 accelerated from 0 to 30 mph in 6 seconds and from 20 to 40 mph in less than 8 seconds. It bursts on plane in 3.2 seconds and when using PerfectPass Digital Pro, will monitor boat speed, skier weight and other factors to lock into one's ideal pace. I wasn't pulling a rider, but I still had fun.
