2004 Rinker Rinker 232 Captiva Bowrider Description
Maximum versatility: that's how we view the Rinker 232 Captiva bowrider.

In every respect, this roomy family boat is well-suited to island-hopping duty in places like Georgian Bay. But to our surprise, it turned in a strong performance as a tow boat for wakeboarding and skiing and delivered a top speed of close to 50 mph.Versatile indeed.

Clever interior appointments distinguish the Captiva. It features a onepiece fibreglass cockpit liner with snapin carpets. The bow area has the usual seats and storage, but the depth is sufficient to deliver secure, upright seating even in rough water. Beneath the curved glass windshield Rinker has provided a large storage space under the helm. On the companion side, Rinker has included an enclosed head.

Our test boat had a chemical toilet, but a regular marine pumpout head with holding tank is available. It's definitely a sit-down affair but still a great feature for all-day cruising and added safety.

The cockpit shows a lot of innovative thinking. The helm is generously proportioned with swing-up bolster seats that adjust fore and aft for standing operation. There's a tilt steering wheel, black-onwhite instruments including a depth gauge and compass. Switches are lit with breakers and our test boat was equipped with a Sony AM-FM CD player.

The companion area is also spacious but we noticed the dashboard glovebox was not drained and the lid didn't stay open on its own. A footrest would have been appreciated as well. On the positive side, the helm and companion seats swivel to face aft, transforming the cockpit into a living-room-size conversation pit.

The aft bench seat curves up the starboard side and the boat comes equipped with a removable cooler.

The engine cover is a padded sunlounge with a step-through to the swim platform and a port-side console with removable garbage bin. There is storage under the seats and a ski- or paddle-locker under the floor. For watersports fans, there is an optional swim platform (included on our test boat) which extends the boat about another two feet and turns the transom into a real waterfront sports zone.

We mention that because in terms of performance,we made the happy discovery that at wakeboard speeds in the low 20s the 232 dragged a nice big wake yet when you pushed ahead to slalom speeds, the boat lifted and the wake all but disappeared. We think the Captiva will make a surprisingly good towboat.

Part of the credit for that goes to the Bravo Three drive which has counterrotating aluminum props on the same shaft. This cancels out virtually all steering torque and at the same time seems to deliver both solid speed control throughout the range and a very respectable top end.

The boat was planed off in 4.8 seconds and in less than 10 seconds was up to 40 mph. Top speed was 47 mph at 4,800 rpm. At a relaxed 3,000 rpm the 232 is doing 26 mph, ideal for a cottage commuter.

This generously sized family boat can also be ordered as a cuddy cabin for those who prefer to spend the day or even overnight aboard. It's tough to call most boats costing this close to $50,000 a bargain, but for the price,we feel Rinker has hit a home run with the 232 Captiva, at $44,884 as tested. It's a good boat, for value.
