2004 Stanley Stanley 24 Pulse Craft Description
Welded aluminum boats generally are a hardy breed. Stanley Boats builds some of the toughest. Wherever a boat is likely to encounter rocky shoals, or receive little cosmetic maintenance, yet must produce peak performance, you're likely to find a Stanley.

Built in Parry Sound,Ont.,by Connor Industries, Stanley's semi-custom boat line now includes models formerly built by neighbouring competitor Kropf Industrial. This year's test boat, however, is one of Stanley's stalwarts. Like quite a few of the company's boats, it first came into being with commercial use in mind. Still a hit with water-access contractors and marinas, Stanley's Pulse Craft boats are becoming more popular with wateraccess cottagers too.

I can see why, after testing the 24 Pulse Craft on Lake Muskoka late last fall. With its enclosed wheelhouse, the boat is comfortable in all weather. With its 62-inch wide dropping bow-ramp and 14' X 8' level cargo bay, the Pulse Craft is also ready to carry some serious weekend freight. A tad too small for an automobile, the boat easily handles ATVs (a couple would fit on board), a small tractor, backhoe, Bobcat, or a golf cart. My tester even boasted a small manual boom-crane, ideal for placing and removing water toys such as trampolines or wakeboard "rails." It also allows for dockside loading of heavy articles or equipment.

My 24 Pulse Craft test boat was fast enough for water-skiing, but it's more likely to see secondary service as an allround cottage taxi and tour boat.

As for load-carrying capacity,my boat had a relatively light load, with four chainfalls, a few batteries and other assorted winterization gear on board, as the marina was using it to carry service crews around the lake. I tested the boat during lunch break. With that load and two adults aboard, the boat topped out at 50 mph, with the Yamaha 300 HPDI two-stroke outboard turning 5,700 rpm.

The 9' 6" hull, with a fine entry (the V of the bow extends into the water below the wide ramp door), 15-degree deadrise at the transom and broad, flat chines, won't lose much speed when loaded down with more people and gear. The builders also acknowledge that most owners choose 150- to 200-hp outboards, sacrificing a few mph for reduced cost and possibly better fuel mileage.

The direct-injection Yamaha 300 worked very well on the test boat, though, getting it to plane promptly. Handling, while not sporty, wasn't ponderous either.

Accommodation in the six-sided wheelhouse is comfortable, with a double- wide seat at the helm, full standing headroom, an aft wraparound bench seat capable of seating six to eight adults and great visibility. The blue Sunbrella upholstery takes the work-boat edge off the wheelhouse, but still stands up well.Wing doors port and aft can be removed in summer and will provide welcome protection for cool fall days. Aft, behind the bench seat, clear acrylic snaps into place for protection from the elements. It too can be removed in warmer weather. There is cavernous storage space underneath the broad aft seating area.

On deck, passengers come aboard easily via port and starboard doors in the topsides. For a beach landing, passengers could also come aboard on the over fivefoot- wide ramp. Floors throughout are cross-hatched aluminum, the ultimate non-skid.Go ahead, wear your workboots.

So bring all your toys, enough clothes for four days or four seasons and food for the summer. You'll still have space left on the 14' x 8' cargo deck for the lumber to build that new sauna, or a couple of kayaks or just about anything on four wheels. Working or playing, the Pulse Craft can shoulder the load.
