Who took the galley table out?
Whoever is responsible for designing the Carver 396 Motor Yacht without the traditional galley table, to make way for an even more expansive salon, has lots of nautical fortitude. And a good idea.
In the struggle to come up with a new design to compete in the ever-evolving midsize yacht line, Carver has ditched the galley table. To make maximum use of the 13 foot, 11-inch beam, Carver has joined the crowd to push the salon space beam to beam and to accommodate that by raising the exterior gunnel walkways higher.
One step into the elongated salon area and you feel like youre in a condo. If it wasn't overlooking Lake Simcoe, at Crate Marine Sales in Keswick, Ont., I could have imagined being in a penthouse overlooking Tampa Bay or Toronto Harbour. Besides, its not as if the area didn't have a table. Theres one in the salon. The sunken galley is tiered to make maximum use of the counters and to give the illusion that theres a bar behind there, not a fully-equipped cooking area.
The remainder of the interior has an ultraleather sofa and couch and full
entertainment centre.
When its time to retire, the main aft stateroom aft beckons, with the
cherrywood theme found throughout the boat. The queen-size bed runs port
to starboard with a pair of hatches directly behind your head. Like everything else on the 396, the TV is angled, just like the bed is curved.
Where the main stateroom has its own ensuite head and shower, the forward stateroom has a separate shower to the port and a washroom to starboard, a trend that is gaining increased popularity. The forward room itself offers an angled double bed and above, a bunk angled along the port hull. Its a tight space, though, with just under 16 inches of headroom and just 10 inches at the foot of the bunk.While a younger child will appreciate the bunking experience, the area may best serve as additional storage space.
If a traditional forward stateroom is more to your liking, ones available featuring a centre, raised island berth. When you do venture out, and up, to the bridge, a centrally located captains chair is the focal point. The gauges are well-appointed with white and blue on black; theres a welcome foot rest. But, while standing, a six-foot pilot will find his or her head hitting the full enclosure in inclement weather; when the wheel is fully tilted, it hits the dash.
Behind is a curved seat for four to five; theres an icemaker and sink available. The raised gunnels allow for a very wide walkaround and theres an easy transition to the front deck that features a pair of sunpads and a sleek rake to the deck.
To the rear, the swim platform offers a dock box, after five steps down. Theres a ledge on the starboard side, for an easier step to the dock. With Twin Cummins 370B motors, the 396 performs admirably despite pulling a full load of 28,100 pounds along its 40-foot length
