2004 Edgewater EdgeWater 245 CC Description
We didn't go to Florida to test boats. The focus of our Key Largo jaunt was the momentous introduction of Suzuki's 250 hp fourstroke. A local Suzuki dealer had rigged this EdgeWater 245CC with a DF250 for use as a demo at the event. Initially, the goal was to get a hands-on sense of what the motor could do. But the boat and the engine were equally impressive. Intrigued, we ran most of our regular performance and handling tests. Ironically, the only measurements we didn't take were sound levels. ( The DF250 is so darn quiet that noise evaluation is redundant.)

The 245CC was a new model for 2003, slotting in between EdgeWater's flagship 265CC and the more modest 225CC.A big boat with a 9'6" beam, the 265 is a dedicated offshore fish hunter. Although fully equipped for angling, with baitwells, fishboxes, plenty of storage and an array of rod holders, our 245 shares a layout with the 225 that EdgeWater describes as more "family friendly." Along with a variety of helm seat choices, the 245CC can be ordered with plush bow seating that includes gunwale bolster cushions.A bow-lounger cushion is also available. The boat comes with a portable head in the console; a marine head with pump-out is an option. Plus, given an 8'6" beam, the 245CC is trailerable. It's sufficiently muscular to take on big seas, but it's compact and comfortable enough for weekend fun, be that an afternoon's cruise or a rollicking session of tow sports.

At Key Largo we had the rare opportunity to evaluate boats in a variety of conditions. The Ocean Reef Club's marina channel opened up to the Atlantic Ocean and a steady onshore breeze kept the waves running just over a metre high. The EdgeWater loved these conditions, whether running flat out across the top or cruising through the wave fronts. Even when I throttled back to a near wallow to test the Suzuki's lower mid-range capabilities, the hull remained on track and the bow stayed down.

On the leeward side of the Key we found miles of channels that wound around uninhabited islands ringed with mangroves. The water was dead flat. Only in the largest bayou did we find enough of a ripple to obtain good acceleration and top speed data. But, oh my, was this boat fun to drive through those curving mangrove highways. Responsive and accurate at the helm, the 245CC easily lives up to its family fun boat status. Plus, it's quick and it's fast. The DF250 is ideal power for this craft, moving it along at 48 mph after popping it on plane in about four seconds and hitting 30 mph in just over seven. The 245CC is no lightweight runabout, displacing 4,000 pounds with the 250.Those figures are a testament to both the engine and the efficient hull design.

Any EdgeWater test is incomplete without a comment about quality. EdgeWater Power Boats is Bob Dougherty's company - and he created the unsinkable Boston Whaler back in 1958. Bob's goal with the new enterprise was to create bluewater boats that are uniquely robust and seaworthy, impeccably built and equipped. In the competitive bluewater class, where that goal could be claimed by any of the manufacturers, EdgeWaters are standouts. And yes, they are absolutely unsinkable.
