2004 Harbercraft Harbercraft Kingfisher 2525 Pilot House Test Details

I can picture it now. A storm blows in, a rogue wave appears in the distance. Facing my fears, I turn the boat (which strongly resembles Harbercraft's new Kingfisher 2525) directly into the monster's throat. I plant the throttle, climb over its foaming crest, and launch into the air.Moments later the boat lands and I watch the sky part. The storm is over. I head back home with my catch - just another day on the open sea.

Okay, so I'm not George Clooney and this isn't The Perfect Storm. Does it matter that my "catch" is a stringer of sunfish? That's not to say "my" boat isn't real. Matter of fact, the Harbercraft 2525 could well be exactly what fishermen need when the going gets rough.

For 2004,Vernon, B.C.'s Harbercraft Boats offers a new 25' 10" long fishing model known as the Kingfisher 2525 Pilot House. Built for saltwater service, the Kingfisher is ideal for any big-water skippers.

Utilizing Harbercraft's Pre-Flex hull technology, components are flexed in advance of final welding procedures. Bridge decks are built the same way. The end result is that the 2525 doesn't look like a typical aluminum boat. The finish is smooth, with ground-down exterior welds.Harbercraft is also known for its fine finishes. Granite zolatone is used on the top deck and cockpit of the test boat, together with various options including sandstone and off-white accent colours. The 18-degree variable deadrise hull is lightweight. Even with its enclosed, hardtop cockpit and numerous amenities, the 2525's dry weight is only 2,200 lb.

Externally, the boat's 102-inch beam creates presence. Internally, luxurious appointments complete the space. Standard features include crew bench seating for five plus driver. Upgrading to the Weekender Package gives you a dinette with ice chest, alcohol stove, 12- volt fridge and a fold-down berth. The smartly finished cuddy with sink and flush head makes living and entertaining downright civilized.

As this is a fishing boat, you'll appreciate Harbercrafts's huge circulating livewell, the bolster gunnel pads in the aft fishing deck and a washdown pump. Standard is a fish storage compartment with cutting board and a fish-locker in the cockpit floor.A stainless-steel radar arch with eight rocket-launcher rod holders can be added.

I loved the wooden cabinetry, accent panels and general warm feeling within the cockpit. The captain's chair is supportive and wide, with solid armrests and lots of legroom. Thanks to its large, sliding cockpit windows and a solid, secure door, the space is bright and well-ventilated.

The Kingfisher is available with single or twin outboards, but I had the pleasure of testing it with Yamaha's new 300-hp HPDI (High Pressure Direct Injection) outboard, the biggest of the bunch in the outboard horsepower race. Quiet and smooth-idling, the motor comes into its own when the throttle goes down.

Keeping in mind the size of this boat, the 2525 accelerates to plane in 4.75 seconds, to 30 mph in 7.48 seconds and to 40 in 10.8 seconds. All quick times indicating strong torque and mid-range power. The sensation of speed is hardly recognizable within the confines of the cockpit, yet GPS indicated a top-end speed of 46 mph.The hull cuts through waves like a knife, yet skims across the surface with the engine trimmed out.

The 2525 turns well, tracks straight and docks easily.Frankly,I can land most singles as well as I can twin-engine installations. Approaching the pier in the Kingfisher was a piece of cake, which reminds me - with the 2525, you can have your cake and eat it too. Enjoy its accommodating cabin, fishing amenities and speed.

About Harbercraft

Only Harbercraft boats premium all-welded aluminum boats are built with True Canadian Craftsmanship. It comes from over 49 years of aluminum boat building experience using our exclusive Pre-Flex® hull construction process by Alberta and BC's finest craftsmen. The result is a heavy gauge aluminum boat with superior strength, smooth styling and ride with a performance driven hull design that pleases the world's toughest critic

Forty-eight years and 110,000-plus boats later...
Originating on the shores of the mighty Niagara River, the original founders, the Harber family, started manufacturing car top aluminum boats in 1959. With growth and sales demand from major department stores, a second manufacturing plant was built in the 70s near Vernon, B.C. and that is how Harbercraft was born.

As the market demand grew for the product, Harbercraft boats began to develop a marine-oriented dealer network across Canada and the Pacific Northwest. And by the mid-80s, the company was utilizing one of North America's first robotic welders for small-components welding.

Fully-welded aluminum boats made their debut in 1996 as Harbercraft boats began utilizing computer numeric controlled (CNC) technology. Along with the development of the trademark-protected Pre-Flex® hull technology, the company captured a brand new consumer base: those craving the most technologically advanced hull on the market. Advancements in engineering allowed Harbercraft boats to produce hulls with clean lines and proven performance characteristics matched with style, strength and durability. Demand called for it: a new manufacturing facility was built in 1998.

Harbercraft boats involvement in the international whitewater racing circuit as well as short-track sprint boat racing netted 13 World Championship whitewater races. The success had on the world's stage can be attributed to the development of the Next Generation Pre-Flex® hull technology. The learnings from our involvement in racing programs benefit every boat we build today, making them the best-of-the-best for strength, style and performance.

In 2004, the Westwinn Group Corporation became the parent company for Harbercraft boats, marketing and investing further into new product development and improved technology. As a result of this effort, the Harbercraft brand has emerged as a distinct leader in all-welded aluminum boat building in Canada.

In 2006, Harbercraft boats began the rigorous certification and testing process of the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). The National Marine Manufacturers Association establishes a set of safety and performance standards that are far above and beyond the US Coast Guard and Transportation Canada regulations. Harbercraft boat is the only heavy gauge aluminum boat manufacturer with NMMA certification.

Today, your Harbercraft boat is built with revolutionary Pre-Flex hull technology and is NMMA certified. Our engineering and craftsmanship continues to be a symbol of strength, style and durability, providing your family a safe vessel that will last a lifetime.
