2004 Doral Doral Monticello Description
At Doral, Canada's biggest builder of express cruisers, everything old is new again. Although Doral's designs have put the company at the forefront of the industry, its new 2004 boats are bearing names that are right out of the company's past.

Doral is going back to many of the names used to designate its boats before they changed to numbers. Therefore, the 250 se will be the Monticello, 280 se is a Prestancia, 310 se the Intrigue (new name), 330 se the Elegante (also new), 360 se the Boca Grande and the new for 2004 the flagship 47' the Alegria.

The junior sibling of the Doral cruiser family is the Monticello, with an overall length of 28'3' with its extended swim platform.

One of the few options available on the Monticello is a teak swim platform, which really enriches the look of the already sleek-looking cruiser.

The extended swim platform on the Monticello not only creates a great area for swimming but becomes quite useful if you decide to bring along a small tender which can be secured there when under way.

The cockpit area of any boat can never be too big and that's especially true with a cruiser. Often small cruisers become overcrowded quickly with the addition of a couple of passengers. On the Doral Monticello, though, a sliding rear bench seat expands to make extras room for visitors. The aft U-shaped lounge slides backwards over the extended swim platform by a good foot or more, giving that much more room to the cockpit. It makes the Monticello feel like a much bigger boat especially when you put in the rear table.

Another clever option is a teak table for the cockpit, small enough to allow people room to move but large enough to add convenience.

Doral's R & D department definitely has been working to maximize the living space. Like all Doral cruisers, the Monticello has a forward-leaning radar arch with a spotlight mounted on it. The seating arrangement is comprised of a U-shaped rear lounge that extends when the back seat is pulled out over the swim platform and an extra custion is inserted. The helm is comfortable and almost double-width. There is a rearfacing lounge on the companion side.

Therefore the cockpit can comfortably seat six adults with room to spare. Beside the sliding door into the cabin are steps molded into the fibreglass for easy access to the front of the boat through an opening panel in the windshield. On top of the cabin is a full-length sunpad with built in pillow to enjoy those lazy days on the water.

Belowdecks, the cabin features a convertible dinette with plenty of storage below. It converts to a berth with room to sleep two adults. The galley features a stainless-steel sink, pressurized water system, alcohol stove, icebox and storage for dishes and glasses. The head in the Monticello has a fibreglass shower with curtain, porthole ventilation, and toilet with holding tank.

Doral cruisers have always prided themselves on performance, and the Monticello is no exception, reaching a top speed of 44 mph powered by a single MerCruiser 6.2 L sterndrive. Using the trim tabs along with the sterndrive trim, I was able keep the hull of the boat level and running at optimum speeds even as the passengers moved around the boat.

Acceleration was more than acceptable considering we were powered by just one engine. The boat reached 20 mph from a dead stop in 10 seconds and 30 mph in 15.5 seconds. With three adults on board the cruiser maintained a plane at a speed of just less than 20 mph, around 2,700 rpm.

As an introductory-level cruiser the Doral Monticello feels like a larger boat and certainly offers all the amenities to let its owners enjoy some great cruising experiences on the water.
