2004 Seaswirl Seaswirl Striper 2901 Description
Seaswirl has always been well-known in the Pacific Northwest where its factory is located in Culver, Oregon, but never a widely recognized national brand name. That's changing.

These days, in the province of Ontario at least, Seaswirl has a quiet but powerful friend. The company and its large commercial customer may both just be doing their jobs, but the relationship is giving Seaswirl a boost in eastern Canada.

Seaswirl's silent marketing partner is the Ontario Provincial Police, whose marine unit recently purchased several of the company's boats for patrol work. The police don't usually lend marketing support to suppliers; the simply give their business to the company that best meets their requirements. As many boaters know, though, any boat that can stand up to the rugged demands of police use should handle more than most civilians can dish out. For Seaswirl, it's been a significant nod of approval.

So far, the police aren't necessarily lining up to get their hands on Seaswirl's new 2901 - it's probably a bit too big for most marine patrol needs. Neverthless, it is sure to be a tough contender for the hearts and wallets of serious offshore fishermen.

The 2901 I tested off Florida's west coast last summer was powered by two of Yamaha's quiet and fuel-efficient 225 four-strokes, demonstrating the Striper's best fishing feature - the ability to get anglers far offshore, or as far as they want, in safety and comfort. It's got plenty of room for tackle and particularly for fishing rods - in coamings, on holders mounted on the standard-equipment welded-aluminum-frame hardtop and in flush-mount gunnel holders. Other bigwater fishing features include huge infloor fish boxes and a 38-gallon bait well.

The 2901 has other features, though, that are designed to get the whole family hooked on fishing. As well as being an effective offshore fishing machine, the 2901 will also serve as a rugged but capable cruising boat. The first indication is in the cockpit, where a folding aft seat provides comfortable seating for at least two but flips right back out of the way to create plenty of open fish-fighting space.

The cabin is spacious and wellequipped, with a head compartment to starboard (equipped with a Vacu-Flush toilet), a mini-galley to port (with microwave and electric-alcohol stove), dinette/V-berth forward and a mid-cabin aft, behind the companionway. The test boat had optional fold-down bunks (ideal for kids), along with the optional generator and air conditioning. With that kind of equipment and plenty of headroom, the cabin would easily serve as a weekend home-on-the-water.

Despite its family-oriented comforts and conveniences, the Striper 2901 is still serious about fishing. Some features serve both activities. The stern transom door, for example, located to starboard, gives your crew easy access to the small but serviceable swim platform (a removable boarding ladder is mounted forward of the engines). The same door and platform are ideal for landing big fish. The high bowrails extending almost to the aft end of the cabin means the crew can go forward in safety for fish-fighting, anchoring or line-handling.

Whether fishing or cruising, all boaters will appreciate the Striper's comfortable helm seat that moves back far enough to allow for stand-up driving. They'll also appreciate the boat's performance.

The 20-degree V-hull handles big waves and swells without so much as a hiccup and cruises along nicely at about 31 mph at 4,000 rpm. My test boat topped out at 45.2 mph at 5,400 rpm.

Fast enough to get you anywhere you want to fish, the 2901 Striper is also comfortable enough to keep you on the water for a weekend or even longer.
